A massive fire broke out at the famed Notre Dame cathedral in Paris on Monday afternoon, officials said.

Black smoke could be seen from a distance billowing out from the top of the medieval cathedral, while flames leaped out from two of its bell towers. The sight stopped pedestrians in their tracks along the Seine River, which passes under the cathedral.

A dramatic video showed the cathedral's main spire collapsed from the blaze. Local reports said the roof collapsed.

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo called it a "terrible fire." No injuries have been reported.

The fire department was fighting the flames, while the area near the cathedral was being cleared.

It was not immediately clear what caused the fire. Notre Dame was undergoing a $6.8 million renovation project, with some sections under scaffolding, while bronze statues were removed last week for works

Sources told Fox News that it appears the fire was related to recent construction done at the cathedral.

President Emmanuel Macron canceled a planned televised speech to the nation in light of the "terrible fire" underway at the cathedral, an official at the president's Elysee office said.

Additional information was not immediately available.

President Donald Trump tweeted about the fire, saying it was “horrible to watch the massive fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.”

The cathedral, which dates back to the 12th century, was made famous for featuring in Victor Hugo’s novel “The Hunchback of Notre-Dame.” It attracts millions of tourists each year.

This is breaking news. Please check back for updates.

That's just sad. The church is engulfed, the roof has collapsed and they were making a desperate effort to save as much of the priceless art as humanly possible. 800 years old.

That's a lot of history. What a horrible loss.

Looks like the fire was finally contained with some structural integrity intact. It never got to the towers thankfully. Macron has vowed to rebuild the church. (Which is interesting, since French law prohibited them from assisting in the renovation that was likely the cause of the devastating fire to begin with.)

After we returned from Paris, my mother gave us an original signed sketch of Notre Dame she had purchased in Paris years ago. Today I returned it to her, saying today made us believe she should have it back and find a place to display it more prominently in her home. She just smiled.

That's really sweet. I'm glad you and I both got to see it in the last year. It's stunning, humbling. Even though I feel far from my faith the last few years, you feel close to God in a place like that.

It's wild to me that this seems (from my cursory research) to be the first major fire, given all the wars that have come through or close to Paris over the centuries. Just really sad.

Salma Hayek’s husband, the French billionaire François-Henri Pinault, pledged almost $113 million to rebuild Paris’ historic Notre Dame Cathedral after Monday’s devastating fire.

Pinault announced Tuesday that he will draw almost $113 million in funds from his family’s investment firm, Artemis, “to participate in the effort that will be necessary for the complete reconstruction of Notre-Dame,” the French newspaper Le Figaro reported.

Pinault, 56, who is the chairman and CEO of Kering, a Paris-based luxury group behind brands including Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent, Balenciaga, Alexander McQueen, married the Mexican and American actress Salma Hayek in Paris in 2009, Yahoo News reported. The couple owns a residence nearby the destroyed 12th-century medieval Catholic cathedral.

“As many others I’m in deep shock and sadness to witness the beauty of Notre-Dame turn into smoke. I love you Paris,” Hayek said on Instagram, sharing an image of the cathedral ablaze.

Pinault’s father, the 82-year-old Francois Pinault, is worth $37.3 billion, according to Bloomberg’s Billionaire Index. The family’s contribution is the first major donation to reconstruction efforts after the fire engulfed the historic structure, leading to the collapse of the structure’s main spire.

Bernard Arnault, owner of the luxury goods group LVMH, which is responsible for Moët Hennessy and Louis Vuitton SE among other brands, pledged $226 million toward reconstruction efforts. The Arnault family and LVMH will make the donation to save such an important “symbol of France, its heritage and its unity,” LVMH said in a statement.

A public fundraising drive for reconstruction efforts kicked off Tuesday. French President Emmanuel Macron addressed a sorrowful crowd at the site. He vowed to rebuild the cathedral for the French people, describing it as the “epicenter” of their lives, The New York Post reported.

“It is what our history deserves,” Macron said. “It is, in the deepest sense, our destiny.”

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

It was only a matter of time. :|

Waiting for Omar to compare it to the destruction of Mesopotamian artifacts by the imperial west.

Or go to anywhere in Mecca and knock down one building. It doesn't even have to be 400 years old.

Knock it down, light it up and then make fun of the act online. I guarantee at least five terror attacks will follow within a month.

Rolling Stone Magazine is facing criticism on Tuesday over a quote used on social media to highlight a piece on the rebuilding of the Notre Dame Cathedral after the devastating fire.

The article, titled, “How Should France Rebuild Notre Dame?” asks several experts and historians about the first steps in repairing the damage. Harvard University architecture historian Patricio del Real offered a new take on the meaning behind the fire.

“The building was so overburdened with meaning that its burning feels like an act of liberation,” Patricio del Real told Rolling Stone.

Although I was raised Catholic, I am not religious by any stretch of the imagination. I pretty much hated going to church like probably a lot of kids did. But I don't hold any disdain over any of it. So I find it kinda fucked up that Christianity is an okay target to mock, condemn, and denigrate but every other religion is off limits.

As Christians and non-Christians alike stood in solidarity on Monday and mourned the loss of a cathedral that Pope Francis humbly labeled an "architectural jewel of a collective memory," the halls of social media were occasionally disrupted by vocal minorities of hard leftists who reveled in Notre Dame's destruction.

What joy could people possibly be expressing as fires savaged an 800-year-old cathedral? According to some of these hard leftists, the destruction symbolized the Catholic Church's karma for centuries of cruelty or, at the very least, colonial France's karma for what it has allegedly done to other cultures. A thread compiled by Andy Ngo of Quillette best illustrated the collective mockery:
1117906541225463808
"I wonder how many art pieces and artifacts that were sitting in the Notre Dame were stolen from former colonies," said user Shaziya. When confronted with criticism and backlash, she doubled down: "I’m criticizing French colonialism, if this bothers you so much then you ought to reevaluate your morals, bye."

"I think it sucks that Notre Dame is burning but f*** imagine if we had this same energy for every historic building we carpetbombed in the Middle East," said another user.

Other users reveled in the fact that "white people" were saddened to see Notre Dame go up in flames. "I'm dying at the white people triggered," said one person named Aly. "It's a damn building that's literally used for tourism, no one died, move on."

While Notre Dame indeed invited tourists to look upon its magnificent beauty, becoming one of France's most iconic landmarks, the cathedral still served as a home to practicing Catholics who worshiped God through the Holy Mass every Sunday — not to mention the multiple popes in recent history who have led processions there. The church hosted weddings, funerals, and consecrations. It never sacrificed its Christian mission at the altar of commercialism, as perhaps best exemplified by the priceless relics — including the crown of thorns said to have been worn by Christ — that Notre Dame housed within its walls.

"Notre Dame on fire is the most aesthetically pleasing visually I've ever seen," said another user.

"This one's for colonizing African countries b****," said another user.

"Notre Dame burning is cosmic karma for all the historical sites and artefacts [sic] France destroyed and stole when being colonialist scum," said the blue-checkmark "culture writer" Hikikomori Povich.

Showtime associate producer Muna Mire offered this take:
1117850844039405568
In the chaos of the destruction, people on social media immediately jumped to conspiracy theories as to who started the attack. According to investigators on Tuesday, arson has been ruled out and the probe will focus on the construction firm hired to renovate the cathedral.

"Just a little less than 24 hours after a blaze ripped through Paris' Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris prosecutors are saying the fire was likely an accident, not arson, and that the construction company in charge of a $5.6 million renovation to the cathedral's roof and spire will be under the microscope," The Daily Wire's Emily Zanotti reported.

In the meantime, two French billionaires have pledged over 300 million Euro to rebuild Notre Dame, with many from across the world also offering to donate funds. As the fire calmed, French President Emmanuel Macron promised that his government and subsequent governments will ensure that the cathedral glorifies the Parisian skyline once again.

A lot of pledges to help rebuild have come to light. I think the news said that more than $1 billion has been pledged.

That's nice but still, it'll never be the same.

Well they got one part right.

"The building was so overburdened with meaning..."

It's an 800 year old landmark and one of the most beautiful structures in the world. Religious or not it's a standing part of history.

So then I guess when the terrorists knock down the Eiffel Tower these same social media scumbags are going to come out of the woodwork and say - good, it represented blah blah blah? :|
