LAKE IN THE HILLS, Ill. -- A mother says she and her two boys were asked to leave a theater over the weekend after moviegoers complained her son with disabilities was making too much noise.

Jennifer Daly says it's not easy taking her two boys to the movies because her 3-year-old son Jonathan has a rare form of dwarfism and needs to be taken around in a wheelchair with medical equipment.

While he can’t talk, Jonathan is very animated and can make some sounds.

Feeling up to the challenge Friday night, the three went and saw "Dumbo" in the AMC theater in Lake in the Hills, Illinois.

About an hour into the movie, Daly said Jonathan started laughing and making noises.

She said 10 minutes later, an AMC employee approached them and said there was a noise complaint of a baby crying, and they were asked to leave the theater.

Daly said she was in shock and, as she started processing what happened, broke down in tears.

"I was angry, I couldn’t believe I was getting kicked out of a movie. I’ve never been kicked out of anything in 43 years," Daly said.

In an emailed statement, AMC Theaters Director of Corporate Communications Ryan Noonan said a manager received multiple complaints about an "ongoing disruption" during the film, and after observing the issue, spoke with Daly.

"To ensure a quality moviegoing experience for everyone, disruptive behavior is not permitted during a movie," the statement said.

According to Noonan, Daly was given a refund and declined "several options," including moving them to different seats, a private show, or a screening during a "sensory friendly" movie program, which waives their normal rules on disruptive behavior.

Daly acknowledged the manager at the AMC tried to make it up to her by offering movie vouchers, but said at that point she was just ready to go home.

"I can’t say that I felt like I was being discriminated against, I don’t think that was the lady's intention," Daly said.

She said she didn't want it to happen again, so the next day she turned to Facebook to tell her story, and the post began to go viral.

"I don’t want anything from them, all I want is for them to train their staff better, I want people to be aware that we have to be more kind to each other and put ourselves in each other’s situations once in awhile, and remember to be kinder to each other before jumping to some conclusions," Daly said.

You know, I have some sympathy for her, to a point. But as you read the story, she just sounds like she feels entitled and that people should feel bad for her, not the (however many) people at the same movie at the same time as her. With the prices of today's movies, I know I HATE it when there are idiots being disruptive during the movie. Not that this kid is an idiot, but his mother is. They offered to make it up to you and FFS the movie theater chain has showings SPECIFICALLY for children/families like this where they waive the 'no disruptions' policy. And of course what does she do? Instead of taking the theater up on any of their offers, she goes and whines about her 'poor me' experience on Facebook.

This is why i never go to the cinema anymore, too many noisy people. Im paying to watch and listen to a movie, not to listen to other patrons.

Yes. Have a special needs kid? Go to the special needs screening. It's awesome they even have those.

Tough call on this one. The kid doesn't get to go to many things like this but the other patrons have rights too.

Last movie I went to a 20-something kid beside me kept taking out his phone every 10 seconds. Screen would really light up, he'd put it away. It was a nervous tic like someone flicking a lighter constantly or tapping their fingers. First I gave him some strong side eye, then full on side eye and then I turned, looked down at his phone and then back to his face. He finally got the message and put it away.

I think it makes it less of a tough call for two reasons. First, the theater offers special showings for special need people, both kids and adults (see link a couple of posts up). And second, this lady felt the need to whine on FB about this instead of taking up the theater on its offers to her and stated that people need to be more considerate of her and her needs, not the other way around.

Yeah if they have accommodated people with children like hers, it's really her driving the situation and not thinking it through. I never realized there were special screenings.

This was the best solution. Too bad she turned it down.

Yes, that's always a reasonable solution.

It wasn't the staff's fault, you cunt. You could try putting yourself in other patrons' shoes. They paid money to watch and hear a movie, not to listen to your disabled kid, you inconsiderate bitch.
