LOCK HAVEN – A man high on bath salts who thought fireflies were green lasers from aliens or people coming after him has been sentenced to three to six years in state prison.

Clinton County Judge Michael Salisbury on Monday imposed the sentence on Jesse Shields, 31, who had pleaded guilty in March to charges of criminal trespass and possessing a firearm without a license.

The charges stem from an incident that begin late last June 29 in the Loganton area in which Shields fired a shot into the air to scare off “whoever was messing with them” and broke into two homes.

His girlfriend and co-defendant Katherine McCloskey, 23, who is from Mill Hall like Shields, pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of a controlled substance and disorderly conduct. She was sentenced Nov. 8 to six days to six months in county prison.

A state police affidavit provides the following account of what occurred:

Timothy Neff was getting ready to go to bed when he heard yelling and loud talking. He went to the door and a man asked him to call 911.

While doing so he heard the glass in the storm door break and the man came into the house. A woman with him was crying.

After waiting 20 minutes, the man walked and the woman drove a pickup truck to the nearby Log Run Road home of Gary and Glenna Emel.

The Emels were awakened by screaming in the living room and when Gary Emel went to investigate he encountered a man holding a revolver pointed at the floor yelling he had been attacked and to call 911. Emel grabbed the gun.

The male claimed there was something on his skin that was burning and asked to take a shower, which he did.

The first trooper on the scene found Shields naked, covered by a blanket siting on the front steps.

After being taken into custody Shields told a trooper that McCloskey and he had spent the day riding around in her father’s pickup truck with plans on having sex.

After parking the truck, both started seeing green laser lights in the sky and hearing voices. When the truck began to shake he grabbed the pistol belonging to McCloskey’s father and fired a warning shot into the air.

McCloskey was on state parole at the time and was not to have contact with Shields, with whom she has a child that was 10 weeks old then.

A crystal-like substance was found on a spoon where Shields had been sitting in the truck, investigators said.
