A TEENAGE army cadet who killed a university lecturer with electric drills, knives and a hammer has been detained in a psychiatric hospital.
The 17-year-old who has been diagnosed with schizophrenia had Google searched: "could a drill go through a skull" before the savage attack.
The teen, who cannot be identified due to legal restrictions, remained emotionless as the judge described the attack on 54-year-old Dr Barry Hounsome as 'vicious and ferocious'.
Dr Houndsome was massacred so 'brutally' that pathologists could not determine how many times he was smashed around the head with a hammer initially.
Once he had cracked the lecturer's skull open in his own home he drilled through his brain in the gruesome and prolonged attack.
The teenager was repeatedly asked "why?" by the doctor as he was being killed but the boy said he could only reply with "sorry."
The attacker wore goggles and a stab-proof vest and had a host of 'distrubing' images of dead bodies and dismemberment on his phone.
The court heard that he had also killed, skinned and decapitated animals.
Prosecutor Kelly Maylin said: "Other boys he knew through Army cadets said he was a bit of a loner.
"He had skinned a lizard, killed squirrels and decapitated a bird.
"In the run up to the killing the boy used his Amazon account to buy items.
"They were a torch, ammonia, a glass oil dispenser and a clawhammer. They arrived 11 days before the killing and blood was later found on that clawhammer.
"Before the killing he made searches on Google. The day before he searched 'parts of the brain and their function', 'what happens if you drill into a skull?', 'could a drill go through a skull?'.
Mr Justice Neil Garnham said although the boy is remorseful there is risk of future offending.
HIGHLY DANGEROUS
He said: "You are plainly remorseful, you are riven with remorse for what you have done.
"I have no doubt that you still remain and were at the time highly dangerous.
"Without medication there is a real risk of a similar event in the future. Even with medication this voice may return and you require hospital treatment."
He also said in today's hearing: "The idea of him being at liberty and not in a hospital fills with me horror."
Imposing 'a hospital order without time limitations' which will see him locked up indefinitely, the judge said the boy was 'unable to exert self-control'.
The judge said: "For reasons that appear impossible to understand, you, somewhere between 9.22am and 12.05pm, attacked your victim and killed him in the course of a vicious and ferocious attack.
"These appalling actions were at first blush inexplicable, however, the explanation you have offered throughout is that you were acting for the voice in your head which took control of your actions.
"You have said you experienced this voice for a year or so and it made requests and became more and more insistent.
"This extreme incident has been considered by three psychiatrists and it's the view of all three experts that this dreadful event was the result of a psychotic illness.
"I'm satisfied you were suffering from schizophrenia and it impaired your ability to exert self-control.
"It's clear you were capable of rational thought and you knew what you were doing was wrong but you had limited control of your body.
"It's clear this illness was episodic and that medical treatment should have been sought.
"This order will provide the necessary treatment and protection for the public."
