A 12-year-old girl and three other minors took the family car for a drive on U.S. Highway 54/70.

All four children admitted to drinking alcohol, police records state. The names of the children were not released.

The girl who was driving was referred to Juvenile Probation and Parole (JPPO) for reckless driving and DWI.

Alamogordo Police Officers were seeking a wanted person near Walker Avenue, when officers saw the car with the children leaving a closed business area, Alamogordo Police Chief Brian Peete said.

The vehicle fled while an APD officer attempted to identify the owner of the car.

The girl drove the car east on U.S. Highway 70 where she passed a New Mexico State Police vehicle.

Police said the pursuit continued after the girl drove through a dirt lot and nearly struck an Otero County Sheriff's Office deputy.

The vehicle spun out of control shortly after on U.S. Highway 54, hitting a speed limit sign.

There were no injuries reported.

All the passengers showed signs of impairment, Peete said

“We’re coordinating legal options now. Coordinating with the city attorney, the district attorney and JPPO to try to figure out what’s next,” Peete said.

APD is also working with the Alamogordo Public Schools as a part of a “comprehensive approach to disciplinary action,” Peete said. “We’re using a coordinated effort to get to the bottom of this.”

The investigation is ongoing and Peete said that APD and the other agencies are thankful that no one was hurt.
