INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — An apparent tiff about an unflushed toilet overflowed into a dispute involving a swinging plunger, according to an Indian River County Sheriff’s Office report.

The case dropped about 7:40 a.m. May 23 when deputies went to a disturbance in the 4300 block of 35th Avenue.

A 58-year-old woman identified as the victim said her roommate, Trovon Patterson, 36, spat on her.

She said the discord began as Patterson “refused to flush the toilet after using it,” the report states. Mention was not made of air freshener or potpourri.

Many consider leaving a toilet unflushed after a bladder is drained or bowels are moved to be poor etiquette.

The 58-year-old woman reported telling Patterson a number of times to flush, and said he started spewing expletives and spitting on her.

“(She) advised she picked up a plunger and began swinging it at Patterson to keep him away,” the report states.

Infrequently employed as a weapon, a plunger is a stick with a rubber suction cup at one end used in clearing clogged toilets or pipes. They are often required when a commode or plumbing system becomes overloaded with toilet paper, fecal matter or other items.

The woman said spit hit her face and hair.

Patterson appeared to dump blame on the 58-year-old woman. He told investigators he expectorated on her “after she attacked him with a cooking pot,” the report states.

In the end, Patterson was issued a notice to appear in court on a battery charge.

The report doesn’t state whether the toilet got flushed.
