As Iron Man, he saves the world using innovative advanced technology. And now in real life he plans to do something very similar.

Speaking at the opening of Amazon’s re:MARS conference in Las Vegas on Tuesday evening, Mr Downey Jr says he’s launching a new organisation to “clean up the planet significantly, if not entirely, in the next decade” using robot technology.

He explained how the role of billionaire technocrat Tony Stark had boosted his knowledge of science and engineering: “By Hollywood osmosis, for the last 11 years or so I’ve been steeped in the actual history of AI and space stuff as it happened and is happening in reality,” he said. “I think it’s a great read.”

“I swear to God, and I’ll say this right here in front of everybody, I’m willing to spend the next 11 years making good on that statement, and I’ll repeat it: Between robotics and nanotechnology, we could probably clean up the planet significantly, if not entirely, within a decade,” Downey continued.

“It’s a kumbaya pipe dream, it’s a logistical clusterfuck, it’s an impossibility. Kinda like the movies,” he said. “So, to me, that’s kind of a turn-on.”

Downey, who is estimated to have a net worth of over $80 million, said that he got the idea after having a dinner conversation with a group of experts.

He vowed to plough his Marvel movie fortune into anti-pollution projects using cutting edge robotic technology: “I’m going to get actual smart people around me, and then in 11 years, when I’m 65, if we’ve made a notable dent in what I think is a massive threat to our future, I’m going to throw the nuttiest retirement party you’ve ever seen,” Downey told the crowd. “And you’ll be invited.”

RDJ's Net worth is around 300 million, not 80.

I'm sure he won't have any issues finding venture capital for a project like this.

The moment they create/find robots that can sweep ocean waters and pick up all of those plastics, we're in.

Step two - What to do with all of that plastic once harvested.
