Two randy kookaburras are believed to have caused a widespread power outage to more than 1000 customers in Perth’s northern suburbs.

A witness who was out walking his dog just after 4pm said he saw the two love birds, who appeared to be mating at the top of a power pole, come into contact with power infrastructure on the corner of Albion Place and Fair Lane Drive in Carine.

He said there were “two big blue flashes” accompanied by loud bangs.

Power was restored to some parts of the suburb by 5.30pm.

Western Power spokesman Paul Entwistle said crews were sent to the scene to assess the damage.

"It seems to be a case of a couple of lovebirds who have made the wrong connection, unfortunately," he said.

Mr Entwistle said technicians were working to restore power to the suburb as quickly and as safely as possible.

"I don't think it's going to be that long to tell you the truth, we've got a couple of crews out there having a look at the lines," he said.

"The thing that's probably holding it up is the pole that they decided to make their love nest was pretty close to a substation, so just because of protocols we have to have a bit of a look around the sub-station too to make sure there was no flash-over that's gone back into the substation.

"But I think generally from these sorts of incidents, the network comes out trumps but the birds seldom do."

Both kookaburras did not survive the incident.
