INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Sometimes being a multimillionaire isn’t what it’s cracked up to be.

Take the June 4 case of James Groves, 51, at a truck stop in the 8900 block of 20th Street in Vero Beach.

Indian River County sheriff’s deputies went to the establishment and spoke to the manager, an arrest affidavit states. She said a man entered the ladies bathroom and hollered at workers, who asked him to leave.

Deputies found the man – Groves – drinking Four Loko, a canned alcoholic beverage available in varieties including fruit punch, hemp and sour grape. Groves smelled of booze and had a hard time standing.

Groves told deputies he "lives in Malta and has only 8.8 million dollars of Bitcoin on him,” an affidavit states.

Malta, the capital of which is Valletta, is an island nation in the Mediterranean Sea about 50 miles south of Italy, while Bitcoin is a crypto currency accepted by few brick-and-mortar businesses.

Groves said he had nothing else to pay for a hotel, or friends to call.

He did have two new flat panel monitors, five bags of clothes and other items.

Groves refused to leave.

“I asked if he could use a credit card to get a hotel room and he stated that he does not have any money in his account except for 8.8 million in Bitcoins,” the affidavit states.

Groves, who has a listed address in Palm Bay as opposed to Malta, was arrested on a disorderly intoxication charge and taken to the Indian River County Jail.

It wasn’t immediately clear whether Bitcoins can be used to bond out of jail.
