A police officer in Sacramento, Calif., died late Wednesday hours after a suspect opened fire on her and other officers while responding to a domestic violence call.

Police later identified the slain officer as 26-year-old Tara O'Sullivan. The suspected gunman surrendered to authorities after he'd barricaded himself inside a home for nearly eight hours, The Sacramento Bee reported.

O'Sullivan had been working for the city since January 2018, according to city records cited by the paper. She was part of the first class of graduates of Sacramento State's Law Enforcement Candidate Scholars program in 2017 and went on to the Sacramento Police Academy.

Several officers were on a domestic disturbance call, helping a woman collect her belongings and leave a home on Redwood Avenue near Edgewater, when the officer was wounded, Sgt. Vance Chandler said. Deputy Chief Dave Peletta said O’Sullivan was partnered with a training officer when she was shot just before 6 p.m.

O'Sullivan lay in the backyard of a home and officers couldn't reach her because the gunman kept firing, Chandler said. Police were swarming backyards in search of a suspect and warning residents to stay inside. Multiple gunshots were reportedly heard.

The gunman likely fired from the backyard of a home there, the Sacramento Bee reported.

The paper, citing police scanner chatter, reported a suspect was pinned down and officers authorized to use lethal force.

Police said other officers maintained cover for about 40 minutes until they were able to get an armored vehicle in the area and execute a rescue of O'Sullivan. It took more than 45 minutes to get her to the hospital, Chandler said.

"To Tara's parents and family, and Tara's fellow officers, I am so sorry," wrote Darrell Steinberg on Twitter. "As a father I am grieving with you. As Mayor of the city she sore to protect, our city is heartbroken and we are here for all of you every step of the way."

Multiple law enforcement agencies were assisting the Sacramento Police Department. Police warned residents by loudspeaker to stay out of the area near the intersection of Redwood Avenue and Edgewater Road. Police were keeping media and onlookers out of sight of the scene.

The suspect emerged from the front door of a barricaded home shortly before 2 a.m., ending a nearly eight-hour standoff with authorities, according to The Bee. Officers had managed to negotiate with the suspect through a cell phone, the report said.

Police said he was taken into custody. No additional details were released.

Sacramento police appeared to struggle to get cooperation from bystanders Wednesday evening while cordoning off the scene of a shootout that led to the death of one of their own.

A video posted to Twitter by Matthew Keys, a digital editor at Comstock's Magazine, appears to capture neighborhood residents shouting back at officers as they try to secure the area.

At one point, as an officer tries to move residents back, away from the crime scene, a woman off camera can be heard saying: “When this thing is reestablished we’ll move. We gonna watch, though.”

“You all are looking for one person?,” someone is heard asking the police.

“The only person we need to be safe from is you,” another woman off camera is heard shouting.

“Hey, stray bullets catch people, man,” the officer responds.

Another voice behind the camera berates a cop for wearing a gun, repeatedly calling him a “coward.”

“Take that gun off. I’ll whoop your little butt,” the woman says. “All y’all cowards.”

“We know they are,” says the first one.

“Y’all cowards. We got guns too,” another voice says.

A female Sacramento officer died late Wednesday, hours after someone with a rifle opened fire on her and other officers while responding to a domestic violence call. Authorities had evacuated residents in the area and were engaged in an hours-long standoff with the suspect who had barricaded himself inside a home.

The joy of being a cop in an American city in 2019. :|

Those people (and a few others) should read the piece I did written by a veteran who did two tours in Iraq. He said even with months of training and experience, soldiers were never allowed to carry around weapons 24/7 and it was considered a privilege when they were allowed to do so. He cited how many civilians could secure weapons without registering after minimal background checks and said some city streets in America give him the same sense of trepidation as some of the areas his platoon walked into in Iraq.

This isn't my narrative, this is a guy who's been in the military since his late teens and saw action overseas. His summary from the article was that real danger comes from the lack of training coupled with the ease of acquiring weapons in some states. He felt all people purchasing guns should be tested on a firing range.

Then again, these people giving the cops lip in the story need to catch a bullet or two and that may help the respect level a bit.
