Southern California, reeling from two of the biggest earthquakes in two decades, could be hit by a staggering 30,000 aftershock quakes by the end of the year, experts warn.
The 6.4-magnitude quake on Thursday followed by the even bigger 7.1-magnitude one the next day, both in the Mojave Desert, have already put California on edge, with Gov. Gavin Newsom also estimating $100 million in economic damage.
Seismologist Egill Hauksson now warns that there is a 3% chance of another quake of magnitude 7 over the next week — with at least one more of about magnitude 6 being expected.
He also warned that it could create so many smaller quakes there could be as many as 30,000 of magnitude 1 or greater over the next six months.
Newsom declared a state of emergency for San Bernadino County and called it a “wake-up call for the rest of the state and other parts of the nation.”
