AN INFESTATION of maggots at a pharmacy had an horrific explanation.

The Lloyds pharmacy in Hull had several visits from pest control companies who were trying to sort out a rat problem at the premises.

The pest controllers were partially successful, they killed at least some of the rats, but that led to another problem.

One staff member spoke anonymously to the Hull Daily Mail:

“We have been inundated with rats at work. Pest control keeps coming and investigating.

“But every time they get rid of the rats, more keep coming back."

She continued: “During the last infestation, the rats were killed but they were left in the ceiling and the flesh began to rot. The smell was horrendous and customers kept asking us what it was and we just had to smile about it.

“There were two rats in the ceiling, just above the tiles, and when they started to decompose it began to leak through the tiles. There was a grey/red splodge which was attracting flies all around it. “I actually poked one of the tiles and half a dozen maggots fell to the floor and were wriggling about.”

Pest controllers were alerted to the new horror and cleared away the rat corpse and maggot combo, but the whistleblower says that the underlying problem still remains and it’s a potential public health risk.

She said: “The concern for us is the public health. We sell all sorts of medication and baby milk so we shouldn’t have issues like this.

“Thankfully it is in the back rather than on the shop floor but it still smells. I think Lloyds needs to sort the problem out fully. It is not pleasant for us or the customers.

“We have been complaining about this for a while but seem to be banging our heads against a brick wall.”

Lloyds Pharmacy says it is doing all it can but other environmental factors, including fly-tipping problems and nearby takeaways are attracting vermin.

A spokesperson for the company said: “We are very sorry for the issues experienced at our community pharmacy in Anlaby Road, Hull.

“It is unfortunate that the surrounding environment has impacted our pharmacy in this way.

"As soon as we became aware of the situation, we took appropriate action and we are continuing to monitor the situation with pest control experts.

“It is really important that our pharmacies are pleasant places to visit for customers and that our colleagues feel proud of and we apologise again that these external factors have impacted in this way.”

This is why drugs are cheaper in Europe versus the US. We prefer our prescriptions WITHOUT rat juice in them
