IRAN has released video and audio showing its forces confronting UK warship HMS Montrose – warning them not to risk their lives – as tensions worsen in the Gulf.

Iranian military branch the Revolutionary Guard released audio and video of the standoff with the Type 23 frigate in the Strait of Hormuz.

It was footage taken during the seizure of the British tanker the Stena Impero on July 19.

"You are required not to interfere in these issues," the Guards navy representative says in the recording published by Tasnim.

"This British warship F236. I am in the vicinity of an internationally recognized strait with a merchant vessel in my vicinity conducting transit passage," a voice with a British accent replies.

"Don't put your life danger," the Guards navy representative says.

HMS Montrose was rushing to the scene as the Iranian state-sponsored pirates boarded the civilian vessel with fast attack boats and a helicopter.

Video previously showed masked commandos from the Revolutionary Guard capturing the ship, which came after Iran openly threatened to seize British ships in the Strait.

Boris Johnson's new foreign secretary Dominic Raab has also today demanded the release of Stena Impero.

He refused to consider a tanker swap, with the feud being sparked when Britain seized Iranian vessel Grace 1 as she sailed past Gibraltar.

"There is no quid pro quo," Raab told BBC radio, "This is not about some kind of barter.

"This is about the international law and the rules of the international legal system being upheld and that is what we will insist on."

Grace 1 was boarded peacefully by Royal Marines as she was violating EU sanctions, carrying oil to Syria.

She was impounded, sparking a furious response from Iran who in-kind warned it would sezied UK shipping in the Gulf.

Tensions have been rising in the region, with Type 45 destroyer HMS Duncan arriving in the Strait over the weekend.

Royal Navy chiefs announced last week the the frigate and destroyer will now accompany British-flagged ships sailing past Iran.

Ships will now have to give advance notice of their planes so they can be escorted by HMS Montrose and HMS Duncan.

It comes after Britain has pledged to form a European naval armada to protect shipping in the Gulf.

Department of Transport bosses advised ships planning to sail through the Strait of Hormuz to notify the UK authorities so they could, if necessary, arrange for them to travel in convoy.

The Government issued a new statement on Thursday which said: "Freedom of navigation is crucial for the global trading system and world economy, and we will do all we can to defend it.

"The Department for Transport has therefore updated its advice to confirm that the Royal Navy has been tasked to accompany British-flagged ships through the Strait of Hormuz, either individually or in groups, should sufficient notice be given of their passage."

Iran's president, Hassan Rouhani, suggested on Wednesday that Stena Impero could be released if the UK takes similar steps to hand back Grace 1.

Grace 1 is believed to have been carrying illegal oil which was bond for Syria and the brutal regime of Bashar al-Assad.

The Strait of Hormuz – a narrow piece of sea between Iran and UAE – has become a battleground for a new wave of tanker wars.

Iran has been accused of in the past two months staging attacks on five oil tankers and a cargo ship.

Tehran denies any involvement in the attacks, but they have soundly been blamed by the US.

Iran also shot down a US drone – nearly prompting a limited strike by Washington before an 11th hour U-turn by Trump.

And causing further tensions, Iran has broken the binds placed on its enrichment of uranium by so-called nuclear deal with the West.

Tehran has said the measures are just for power plant fuel, and will not be used for the development of nukes.

Britain’s new Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, has inherited the crisis – and since sacked the defence and foreign secretaries, the two senior ministers dealing with the tensions in the Gulf.

If the Brits unleash hell on Iran first, then maybe we won't be blamed for it.
