A woman returned home to a living nightmare after discovering a giant huntsman spider lurking on her ceiling.

Laree Clarke turned to social media to ask for help and was advised by one joker it would be easier to burn down her house.

Laree was met by the furry, eight-legged creature at her home in Townsville, Queensland, Australia.

She said she had tried to remove it using a container but the arachnid was the size of an adult’s hand and too big to fit in one.

She wrote on Facebook: ‘Is there anyone that could remove this from my house?? Now!???

‘I don’t have a container that big! When I went near it with the phone light it came at me raising it fangs and legs.

Hell nahhhh!’ Laree was met with a barrage of responses – not all of which were helpful.

One told her to ‘kill it with fire’ while another suggested she ask the spider to ‘pay rent.’

Several people suggested the fire approach, including one who wrote ‘Probably easier to burn your house down at this point.’

Others people were slightly more helpful and urged her not to turn arsonist on the venomous spider.

One woman wrote: ‘I encourage you not to take the Mt Isa approach which is deodorant and a lighter as you can burn the house down and make the news.’

Laree’s call was eventually answered and the spider was removed safely and released – to find another ceiling to lurk on.

Huntsman spiders are sometimes referred to as ‘hairy tarantulas’ and are notorious for appearing inside people’s homes.

They get their name because of their good hunting skills and are known for their size.

On average, a huntsman spider’s leg span can reach 15 cm, while their bodies measure about 2cm.

They use venom to immobilise their prey and will bite animals and humans.

A spider bite from a huntsman is not known to be dangerous to a human but can be painful.
