KIT CARSON COUNTY, Colo. — A massive hailstone that fell in eastern Colorado on Tuesday was the largest ever recorded in the state.

The hailstone fell northwest of Bethune in Kit Carson County. It was 4.83 inches in diameter when it was measured, according to the Colorado Climate Center.

The previous state record for a hailstone was 4.5 inches in diameter.

The Colorado Climate Center said that photos show the hailstone was even larger when it fell because there was a roughly 30-minute period between when it hit the ground and when it was put in the freezer.

“We will consider all information to establish ‘final’ values, but it’s clear that this will be a new record for Colorado!” the Colorado Climate Center said via Twitter.

Strong storms have battered the eastern Plains this week. There were several reports of tornadoes and large hail both Monday and Tuesday.

More severe weather is expected Wednesday, particularly in northeast Colorado.

It's about 170 miles east of Denver, way out by the Colorado/Kansas border. It's in the middle of nowhere on the plains. Biggest I've ever seen up close are no bigger than marble sized hailstones (which can still do some damage, my truck got pelted by ones that size last year and it has all kinds of dents over it).

Imagine getting hit by that

That would hurt like a motherfucker... if you survived getting hit by it and you remained conscious for the experience.

We had a car in our work a few years back that had been caught in a hailstorm over in Germany, the PDR guys took out over 100 separate dents on the roof alone!

That's a link to a story about a hail storm earlier this week in Northern Colorado. If the video will play, check it out.

Our recent hailstorms have been bad as well. This is a girl's car from Edmonton about three weeks ago.

That's a really bad day.

I had to replace my windshield once because a car ahead of me threw a stone and put a little crack in it. I was livid. I can't imagine how I'd react to that ^^^^.

She was a young chick and really cool about it. 'hey I'm fine with hailstorms and expect dents in the car after one. This was something else.'

I guess the car was parked and she came out to it like that. It didn't happen when she was driving.

What could you do walking out to something like that though? Just shrug and go 'OK'.

The worst one we've had around here in the 25+ years I've lived here is the one last spring that hit the area where the shop is. It caused $2.3 billion in damages.

I got so fucking lucky...I left work about 15 to 20 minutes before it rolled through here. If I had still been here, my truck would have been fucked. It was golf ball to baseball sized hail stones.

She pulled the hailstone out of her car after so she knew it wasn't vandalism. Of course the sound of that fucking storm inside of anywhere would alert a person it was probably hail and not vandalism

I've been caught in a few hail storms driving and always think - Thank God I'm not a pedestrian outside in this shit.

*small kid looks up to the sky thinking it's snow and opens his mouth* - Ahhh snowflakes on my tongue....THUD! Waaaaaahhhh the snow broke my fuckin nose Mommy! :(
