A knifeman reportedly armed with a meat cleaver massacred eight children as they arrived for their first day of school.
The suspect, believed to be a former prisoner, launched the attack on the primary school as revenge on society, it has been claimed.
At least two more youngsters are thought to have been hurt in the bloodbath at Chaoyanpo Elementary in Enshi City, China, yesterday morning.
The 40-year-old suspect is said to have been arrested and held in custody, South China Post reports.
Children at the school are aged between six and 13.
Officials have yet to confirm the ages of the youngsters who died and the number injured.
It is not clear what motivated the killings.
One resident told state-approved Passion News outlet: "The culprit was released from prison after serving his term not long ago.
"[He] wanted to take revenge on society so he took a cleaver and went to the Chaoyangpo Primary School in Baiyangping Town."
The Enshi City government, which announced the deaths, said in a statement: "The local party committee and government is all out organising rescue and remedial work."
It follows a string of attacks on children at schools in China.
