A Nixa woman is facing felony charges after police say she stabbed a man several times and choked him with a necktie.

Misty Melton, 39, was charged Monday with first-degree assault and armed criminal action.

According to a probable cause statement in the case, the victim was taken to the hospital in critical condition after Melton stabbed him in the throat and upper torso.

The statement says the incident happened Sunday at the Eaglewood Apartments.

The victim allegedly told Nixa police that he had been hanging out with Melton that evening, drinking and smoking meth, and she got mad that he would not go get more meth.

The victim said Melton was acting like two different people — kind one minute and upset the next. At some point, the victim said Melton started attacking him with a knife, according to the statement.

According to the statement, a witness saw part of the encounter and reported that Melton straddled the victim and attempted to strangle him with a necktie.

Melton allegedly told police that the victim had assaulted her first, but he gave a different account of the encounter.

Melton is being held in the Christian County Jail without bond. She does not have an attorney listed for this case.

The first-degree assault charge carries a possible life sentence.
