WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump wants the government to send checks to Americans in the next two weeks in an effort to curb the economic cost of the coronavirus outbreak. That’s according to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin.

He said Tuesday that “The president has instructed me we have to do this now.”

He didn’t give details except to say the amount should be significant and millionaires would not get it.

The announcement came as the White House asked Congress to approve a massive economic rescue package for businesses and taxpayers.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.

I'm gonna guess that my definition of "significant amount" isn't the same as theirs. :-k

It sounds like its $1000. But, we will see. If its 1 payment and the shutdowns are done at the end of the month then that may help. If it one payment and shit stays closed down, its not going to help much

And no doubt part of it will go back to the government because we'll need to declare it as income on our taxes.

That's what happened the last time G.W. sent us checks..

Hmm, I'm sure I'm like most here. $1000 (($800 after taxes?) Isn't gonna go far. It's a salve I guess.

I'm at the point where I'm still not worried about the virus itself, but I am getting concerned about the absolutely vast over reaction.

Stopped at the store on the way home for a few things and the store was basically picked clean off everything.

I'm worried about people not being able to find what they need, and what they'll resort to doing if and when desperation sets in.

People here have started heading out of the cities into rural areas and cleaning the shelves of their supermarkets.

And when all of those are cleaned out?

As for the checks, #yangwasright. Implement UBI, this is just going to accelerate the inevitable. Small retail will collapse, AMZ will further take over - they are hiring an extra 100,000 people.

Because right now, Amazon IS the supply chain.

Because right now, Amazon IS the supply chain.

Which is exactly the point. As automation consolidates supply chains, including trucking, how do we have a corporate tax structure that reflects that impact on business and workers? How do workers share in that process?

China -> Amazon -> Us

Actually, my last several orders were placed at Walmart.com and Allegro Medical. Amazon didn't have what I needed.

Maybe not Walmart (not sure), but to Lance's point, AMZ logistics and web services handle a LOT more than just Amazon orders.

They'll have plenty of ammo!

I find the money now a bit strange, i thought they would go after business directly to support it currently, keep people employed, and then later when going into recovery phase, give the money stimulus to get people spending again.
horses for courses, the money will be great for folks if this is short term, but all signs point to an extended mess unfortunately.

Sucks to be you! Effective yesterday, only old folks like me can enter Giant grocery stores at 6 a.m. when they open to 7 a.m.

I plan on buying a 12 pack of toilet paper daily, then turning a profit on it later. (Just kidding)

I'm gonna be the "kid" standing outside asking you to please buy me a 12 pack.

Well, I tried it Friday morning. Never again! I'll take my chances with the regular, non-geriatric folk from now on.

I felt like a freaking guest star on" The Walking Dead"
