On Monday night, Queen City Lounge had 40 customers inside drinking and eating from a full buffet. On Tuesday afternoon, several arrests later, police boarded the place up.

The Westwood bar had continued to operate as usual despite Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine’s order that all restaurants and bars in the state of Ohio end their dine-in services to prevent the spread of COVID-19, Assistant Police Chief Paul Neudigate said Tuesday.

It was more than a risk to patrons, he added.

“Now you’re putting first responders at risk because we get the information that they’re open, there’s 40-plus people inside, who knows who may have already come into contact with COVID-19, and now our first responders are having to interact with those folks,” he said.

It wasn’t the first warning Queen City Lounge had received.

“It pains us to have to do this,” Neudigate said. “It pains us that we are in these uncharted waters. This is new territory for your police department.”

Revoke their business license.

I'm surprised you aren't more skeptical of the government's seemingly unlimited power to randomly close private businesses.

I'd really have to look at Ohio's constitution to see what powers are delegated to the governor during times of emergency, but I do believe DeWine declared a state of emergency and most state constitutions give governors broad powers to secure the safety of the public.

If they started talking about gun confiscations or violating any of the other first 10 amendments, I might be P&V here, but the last time I checked, we didn't have the Constitutionally protected right to hold a business license.

Okay, but there are also laws governing how businesses licenses are issued and revoked. But governors and mayors can unilaterally void them with no court supervision and use the power of law enforcement and military with ZERO oversight?

In a state of emergency where the public's health is at risk? The state pulls business licenses for repeated health code violations outside of states of emergencies, this is a state of emergency with respect to a highly contagious virus that is spreading rapidly due to proximity contact.

If anything, I feel bad for the employees because they're gonna have to find new jobs and make ends meet in the mean time, but the parameters were clear, the order was given, the business owner should be punished.

Eh. documented health code violations are different than speculatory measures with no compensation. It's like eminent domain with no market value being paid. I see both sides.

I agree, I feel bad for the workers, but the small business owners also. The dentist next door to me? No business indefinitely.

It's the same for a lot of businesses. And you just reminded me that I had a dentist appointment next month. I guess not anymore.

We are selective about what lives we preserve. We spend inordinate resources giving the elderly a few extra years. Natural selection ended when we started preventing the weak from dying.

Last annual statistics

Murders/negligent homicide: 16,000
Suicide: 1.4 million attempts, 47,000 deaths
Flu: 34,000
Car accidents: 39,000

Money spent on the last year of life: $205 billion annually

And yet we haven't shut down anything for any of that, nor decimated the economy. Huh.

I watched a video on youtube saying that it was a conspiracy, that the coronavirus pandemic was planned population control and everything would end when we had a one world socialist oligarchy government. The dude kept saying the Rockefeller family and Bill Gates were involved and they were planning to use blockchains and implanted RFID chips to control the world.

Be careful :nono: Somehow comparing this to other things, especially the flu, makes you some kind of ignorant person. I've seen that everywhere.

I get it, this thing is fairly deadly to the elderly, but so is the flu or even the common cold if they are frail enough. I'm not sure why this particular virus is the one that we need to close the entire planet for. Especially since for most healthy people, you will only exhibit mild symptoms and will fully recover in about the same time as you would if you had contracted the seasonal flu.

Exactly. So what the fuck. I haven't seen an explanation. If anyone has, please post it.

Maybe it's the same as the Spanish flu 150 years ago when there was no modern medicine.

'State of Emergency' is a polite way of saying 'Martial Law'.. Not much you can do right now.

The numbers don't justify the hype. If the powers in charge wanted to control the populace they would use highly exaggerated stats, but instead they have allowed the media to control us with ridiculously low antics.

More transmissible, more deadly, and no natural immunity are the main reasons given.

Probably a bit of fear of the unknown. For example if it mutates.

It's not more deadly. The flu has killed more people to date so far this year.

The flu is fully propagated, covid is not.

The flu is fully propagated, covid is not.

It doesn't matter. There are more deaths to date this year due to the flu in the US alone, then there currently are due to Covid-19 worldwide. Yes, there will continue to be deaths due to Covid-19, but the same can be said for the flu as well. The World Health Organization estimates that worldwide, annual influenza epidemics result in about 3-5 million cases of severe illness and about 250,000 to 500,000 deaths. The flu has already killed over 10,000 people in the US so far this year, and there will be more. CDC estimates have the figures between 36000 and 55000 deaths in the USA. Covid-19 deaths worldwide are currently estimated at around 9000, a little over 100 in the USA. So Covid-19 has a little way to go to match or exceed the flu. We have a massive response rollout to Covid-19 that we don't have for the flu. So we are actively trying to cut down the infection and mortality rate for Covid-19. While those efforts may inadvertently affect flu infections, we're still not approaching the flu the way we're approaching Covid-19.

There's no natural immunity to influenza either, that's why you need to get a flu shot every year.

And the fear of the unknown is being fanned by the media.

I think if they can get the number of deaths down to 3-5 x the number of deaths than the flu kills it'll be a good outcome.
