NAPOLEON TWP., MI – A Jackson County Department of Transportation truck was heavily damaged a week ago when a naked woman broke into a Napoleon Township lot, stole the truck and hit a deer with it, police said.

Officers received the strange call about the crash near a home at the intersection of Clark Lake and Cranberry Lake roads at around 1 a.m., Wednesday, May 20, Napoleon Township Police Chief Duaine Pittman said.

They arrived to find a heavily damaged JCDOT pickup, a dead deer and a woman wearing only an orange safety vest and hat she had retrieved from the truck, Pittman said.

The 31-year-old woman told officers she was with someone earlier that night who had kicked her out of a vehicle and left her on the side of the road, Pittman said.

It’s unclear how or why the woman was naked, Pittman said, adding he believes drugs and suspected prostitution were involved.

Officers investigating the crash discovered security video at the JCDOT lot on Clark Lake Road that shows the naked woman approach the security gate, punch in random numbers and wait while the gate opened, Pittman said.

She then walked onto the lot, found a county-owned 2017 GMC Sierra that was unlocked with keys still inside and drove it away, Pittman said. Minutes later, she hit a large deer straight on, killing the animal and damaging the front end of the truck, Pittman said.

A Jackson County Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit was brought to the scene to search for additional people who may have been involved in the crash, but none were located, Pittman said.

The woman was taken to Henry Ford Allegiance Health to be checked out for injuries and to undergo mental evaluation, Pittman said. After being cleared, she was arrested and taken to the Jackson County Jail on two outstanding felony warrants from Jackson and Lenawee counties, Pittman said.

A report of the incident has been submitted to the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office for review and charges related to the vehicle theft.
