ST. PETERSBURG — The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office arrested a St. Petersburg couple Friday after deputies said they beat a 6-year-old boy for at least four years, leaving him with bruises and permanent scars.
Samantha Smith, 27, faces felony charges of aggravated child abuse with great bodily harm and child neglect. Smith’s boyfriend, Cody Corbin, 30, faces felony charges of child abuse and child neglect.
It’s unclear how the child is related to Smith or Corbin.
Detectives from the Crimes Against Children Unit began investigating the couple after Smith was arrested in May for child abuse, according to the sheriff’s office. At the time, deputies found a 6-year-old boy with multiple injuries inside Smith’s home in unincorporated St. Petersburg.
A medical examination team told detectives the boy had permanent scars on his body from at least four years of abuse. Detectives found that Smith and Corbin abused the boy by biting him, beating him with objects and kicking him.
They also found that Smith and Corbin withheld food from the boy as a punishment.
Deputies said Smith never sought medical treatment for the boy’s injuries and instead concealed them with makeup and temporary tattoos.
Smith and Corbin were booked into the Pinellas County Jail Friday. The investigation is ongoing.
