A Chinese teenager addicted to bubble-tea fell into a five-day coma after failing to rein in her two-a-day habit.

Nicknamed ‘The Bubble Tea girl’, the 18-year-old was found unconscious by her family after days of feeling nauseous, thirsty and needing to frequently urinate — all classic signs of hyperglycaemia.

The girl from Shanghai, who weighed 125kg, was rushed to hospital where she was put on a ventilator and haemodialysis. Her blood sugar level was 25 times higher than normal.

Her mother reportedly said the girl spent $20 on bubble tea every day for a month.

The girl — who has now recovered and vowed never to drink bubble tea again — lost 35kg in a month during the health crisis.

Emergency department medic Lu Yiming said the girl was one of a number of bubble-tea related hospital admissions, 7NEWS reported.

One Singaporean study found a 500ml cup of bubble tea can contain up to 92g of sugar — or about three times more sugar than that found in a 320ml can of Coca-Cola.

The pearl-like tapioca balls, also known as “boba” that give bubble tea its name can also be problematic.

Tapioca is made from the cassava plant is often used as a thickener.

In June last year Xiao Shena, a 14-year-old girl in China’s Zhejiang Province, was admitted to hospital after more than 100 undigested tapioca balls lodged in her stomach, causing bloating, severe stomach pain and crippling constipation.

Her doctor, Zhang Louzhen, was reportedly speechless after an urgent CAT revealed more than 100 tiny “granular shadows” stuck in teenager’s digestive tract, from her stomach to her anus, according to news.com.

Similarly, a 13-year-old boy needed emergency surgery after the tapioca balls formed two large lumps in is intestines.

Stop it, you.

Jeeze I don't know what a bubble tea costs in China but that has to be like 4-5 big servings a day

I do love a good bubble tea though... first time I tried it I got a mango one and just spit the tapioca balls out the window the entire drive home with friends  It does grow on you though. (setting myself up for a dirty joke here)
