Three teenagers were walking along a railroad bridge when a train came, causing all of them to instantly react.

One hung over the side of the bridge; one laid underneath the rushing train; and one, a 15-year-old girl, was hit and lost her life.

As KDKA-TV in Pittsburgh reports, it happened Wednesday in South Fayette, Allegheny County.

Police tell KDKA the teens, students in the South Fayette Township School District, were walking on the railroad bridge when a west-bound train came along.

The 15-year-old girl was hit and killed, police said. The Allegheny County Medical Examiner identified her as Julianna Gennaro.

A 17-year-old girl reportedly jumped out of the way and hung onto the side of the bridge.

Police tell KDKA the girl was pulled to safety by a nearby construction worker doing some paving work. The girl was hospitalized with a leg injury.

Police said a third teen who was on the bridge simply laid down on the tracks as the train rolled over -- and remarkably survived unharmed.

The train was operated by Wheeling and Lake Erie Railroad. The operator stopped the train after the mishap and cooperated in the police investigation, KDKA reports.
