A Thai city has become overrun with aggressive sex-crazed monkeys, who have begun to invade buildings and terrorise neighbourhoods.

Troops of Lopburi macaques have become increasingly emboldened by the lack of tourists in the area due to the coronavirus pandemic.

With less people feeding them fruits they are said to have become angry and agitated at the lack of food, leading to a surge in attacks on humans.

Now residents in the central Thai city say the situation has become so bad they have resorted to either fleeing their homes, not going out and creating monkey 'no-go zones'.

Government vet Supakarn Kaewchot said: “They’re so used to having tourists feed them and the city provides no space for them to fend for themselves.

“With the tourists gone, they’ve been more aggressive, fighting humans for food to survive.

“They’re invading buildings and forcing locals to flee their homes.”

The primate gangs are said to have taken over a cinema in Lopburi, making it their headquarters.

Their numbers have surged leading to increasing amounts of excrement on the streets.

Resident Kuljira Taechawattanawanna said the situation has become so bad residents feel like prisoners in their own homes.

He said: "We live in a cage but the monkeys live outside. Their excrement is everywhere, the smell is unbearable especially when it rains."

Well meaning locals are said to have fed the animals fast food to calm them down, but the high sugar content has made them more aggressive.

Pramot Ketampai, who manages holy shrines at the Prang Sam Yod temple, told local media: “The more they eat, the more energy they have... so they breed more.”

In one incident a monkeys finds a banana, causing a monkey street brawl.

An onlooker said: "They looked more like wild dogs than monkeys. They went crazy for the single piece of food. I've never seen them this aggressive.

"I think the monkeys were very, very hungry. There's normally a lot of tourists here to feed the monkeys but now there are not as many, because of the coronavirus.''

Now local wildlife authorities say they have no choice but attempted to sterilise 300 macaques before their numbers explode further.

The plan is to lure the animals into cages with their favourite snack, fruit.

Male monkeys will be given vasectomies, be shaved and tattooed with a unique reference number under their arms.

Vet Kaewchot added: “We’re not doing this in the wild, only in the city areas."
