A former teacher from Florence was arrested Thursday after officials said they conducted a yearlong investigation into an "inappropriate sexual relationship" she was having with a 17-year-old student.
Mollie Verkamp, 27, was indicted Tuesday on rape and sodomy charges, according to a release from the Boone County Sheriff's Department.
Detectives began an investigation in 2019 after Walton-Verona school district officials reported to police that Verkamp was sending sexually explicit videos and text messages to one of their students, the release states. That student was 18 years old.
During the course of that investigation, Verkamp told detectives she had previously taught at another high school outside of Boone County, at which she had a similar inappropriate relationship with a then 17-year-old student. The release states Verkamp worked at that school for two years. While employed there, she sent and received sexually explicit messages with the 17-year-old.
The release states that relationship evolved to having sex with the student at her home in Boone County.
Verkamp told detectives that she knew the age of the student and that being a teacher at the same high school made her a person in position of authority, the release states.
Verkamp was not employed with any school district at the time of her arrest on Thursday, the release states. She was not employed during the 2019-2020 school year, but had taught for three years previously.
Verkamp was arrested on an indictment warrant and lodged at the Boone County Detention Center on a $10,000 bond at 20%, according to the Boone County Sheriff's Department. Verkamp is not currently listed as an inmate on the jail's website.
Walton-Verona High School could not be immediately reached Thursday evening for comment.
