MESICK, MI – Two men who fought about payment for leeks were arrested and charged with assault and domestic violence in Wexford County.

Gene Anthony Crandall, 23, of Mesick, is accused of assaulting and strangling 29-year-old Martin James Shafer, of Mesick. The altercation allegedly occurred Shafer confronted Crandall about what he believed to be unfair payment for his work collecting leeks, according to a news release from Michigan State Police.

Crandall is suspected of punching and choking Shafer during the confrontation at a residence on M-115 in Antioch Township near Mesick on May 13, police said. Crandall told police that Shafer struck him first. Both are facing charges.

A woman who lives at the residence with Crandall and Shafer sprayed the men with a hose to break up the fight, police said. Crandall then fled the scene on foot and Shafer called police.
