A massive explosion shook Beirut on Tuesday, killing at least 25 people, flattening much of the port, damaging buildings across the capital and sending a giant mushroom cloud into the sky.

The cause of the explosion remains unclear. The Lebanese Red Cross tweeted that more than 30 teams were responding to the scene of the blast via ambulances.

The health minister said more than 25 people were killed and over 2,500 injured.

Lebanese Red Cross official Georges Kettaneh said the injured were being taken to hospitals outside the capital because facilities there were at capacity. He put the number of casualties in the hundreds but said he did not have exact figures on dead or injured.

The afternoon blast shook several parts of the capital and thick smoke billowed from the city center. Residents reported windows being blown out, and balconies and ceilings collapsing. The explosion appeared to be centered around Beirut's port and caused wide-scale destruction and shattered windows miles away.

A civil defense official on the scene of the blast said his men had evacuated dozens to hospitals and that there were still bodies inside the port, many of them under debris.

Dozens of ambulances ferried the injured from the port area, where the wounded lay on the ground, Associated Press staff at the scene said. Hospitals were calling for blood donations.

“I saw a fireball and smoke billowing over Beirut. People were screaming and running, bleeding. Balconies were blown off buildings. Glass in high-rise buildings shattered and fell to the street,” one unnamed witness told Reuters.

"We are aware of the explosion and are concerned for the potential loss of life due to such a massive explosion," Capt. Bill Urban, a spokesman for U.S. Central Command, said in a statement to Fox News.

The cause of the blast is under investigation but Hezbollah is already in the limelight, multiple intelligence sources told Fox News.

“There are cars with dead people in the streets under rubble, and the medical infrastructure was already at full speed due to the pandemic and lack of supplies,” one source in the region said.

Another source told Fox News that the port was unofficially controlled by Hezbollah, thus pointing out that other adverse players in the region could have played a role.

Lebanon’s Health Minister Hamad Hasan told local broadcaster LBC that the explosion in central Beirut had caused a “very high number of injuries” and extensive damage.

An Associated Press photographer near the port witnessed people wounded on the ground and widespread destruction in central Beirut. Some local televisions stations reported the blast originated inside an area where firecrackers were stored.

"It was like a nuclear explosion," said Walid Abdo, a 43-year-old school teacher in the neighborhood of Gemayzeh near Beirut.

Charbel Haj, who works at the port, said it started as small explosions like firecrackers, then the huge blast erupted, and he was thrown off his feet.

Miles from the port, balconies were knocked down, windows shattered, streets were covered with glass and bricks and lined with wrecked cars. Motorcyclists picked their way through traffic, carrying the injured.

One woman covered in blood from the waist up walked down a trashed street while talking furiously on her phone. On another street, a woman with a bloodied face looked distraught, staggering through traffic with two friends at her side.

"This country is cursed," a young man passing by muttered.

The explosion happened just days before a United Nations tribunal is expected to issue its verdict on four alleged Hezbollah members accused of killing former Lebanon Prime Minister Rafic Hariri in a 2005 car bombing on the Beirut seafront, the BBC reported.

Some reports said there might have been a second blast Tuesday across the city near the Hariri family residence.

The blast came at a time when Lebanon's economy is facing collapse, hit both by a financial crisis and coronavirus restrictions. Many have lost jobs, while the worth of their savings has evaporated as the currency has plunged in value against the dollar. The result has thrown many into poverty.

It was the latest chapter for a country that has suffered a 15-year civil war, repeated conflict with Israel, political assassinations, and various other crises including the current unprecedented financial and economic crisis.

Fox News' Trey Yingst, Hollie McKay and the Associated Press contributed to this report.

What has that kind of explosive power other than a nuke?

I wonder did the initially explosion set off some sort of massive refinery or fuel storage, it was at a port, such an explosion.
Don't think I've ever seen footage quite like that.

I've seen a few clips taken from boats. The speed of the blast wave coming across the water is impressive.

As Lebanon reels from a major explosion that has killed dozens and injured thousands, the nation’s Prime Minister has revealed a disturbing fact about the warehouse at the centre of the blast.

The explosion erupted in the Beirut’s port area late afternoon on Tuesday, with videos showing a fire burning in a building in the area before an enormous blast.

Lebanon’s Prime Minister Hassan Diab said 2750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate were being stored in a warehouse for years. He said this was “unacceptable”.

“I will not rest until we find the person responsible for what happened so we can hold them to account and impose the most severe punishment,” Mr Diab was quoted as saying by an official Twitter account.

“It is unacceptable that a shipment of 2750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate has been present for six years in a warehouse, without taking preventive measures and endangering the safety of citizens”.

Author and former spy Aimen Dean took to Twitter and said that, given his knowledge of knowledge and experience with ammonium nitrates explosives, the warehouse was a “massive time bomb”.

“What happened in Beirut port today was nothing short of criminal negligence,” he said. “You can’t store ammonium bitrates in hot and damp conditions for 4 years, it was a massive time bomb.”

Local media reports indicate the chemicals were seized from a sinking ship more than a decade ago.

The explosion in Beirut is reminiscent of the destruction inflicted on the Chinese city of Tianjin by a 2015 warehouse disaster that killed more than 170 people and left hundreds injured. Ammonium nitrate was also involved in that explosion.

Chinese authorities claimed the first explosion had been triggered after the heat of summer caused a highly flammable compound called nitrocellulose to spontaneously catch fire. Nearby stores of ammonium nitrate then caught fire and exploded.

Beirut’s explosion yesterday killed at least 73 people — including one Australian — and thousands have been injured, and the number of fatalities is expected to skyrocket.

The blast tore down buildings, flattened houses, ripped balconies from apartments, tossed cars from the nearby motorway, and sent a huge plume of smoke billowing across the city.

The disaster comes amid a difficult period for Lebanon, which was already suffering under a number of major crises.

Tensions are so high in the Middle East that Israel immediately issued a statement saying it was not involved in the blast.

https://i.imgur.com/xeCx48h.png

Iranian-backed Hezbollah also quickly shot down theories that the explosion was related to a weapons facility or an Israeli strike.

“This tragic catastrophe and the unprecedented damage it has created … require solidarity and unity from all Lebanese people, political forces and national actors,” a statement from Hezbollah said.

Residents in Lebanon were suffering under massive inflation and struggled to buy basic goods in some areas — and that was before the pandemic hit.

The government was limiting daily electricity to just two to four hours a day and the nation’s currency plunged 80 per cent.

Tensions are also high ahead of Friday’s verdict in a trial over the killing of ex-Prime Minister Rafik Hariri in 2005.

They're saying the explosion was approximately 1/5 the explosive power of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima in WW2.

It did look like a bombing. Even the Lebanese government officials compared it to the bombing of Hiroshima in WW2. And judging from previous world events, there was no reason to rule an intentional bombing out as a possibility at the beginning. Technically speaking, there's still no reason to rule it out. We may know it was stored ammonium nitrate that exploded, but what we don't know is how it ignited in the first place. It could have been an accident, it could have been intentional. Time will tell.

It's unfortunate that we live in a world where we have to consider these terrible things as a possibility, but we don't get to choose the world we live in, we just have to face reality and make due with what we have.

So there were individual 1 ton bags, they mostly light off individually

These were the 2 closest to blast I found

Same orange as the hydrazine or whatever that blew up on the SpaceX pad...

Someone posted yield calc for ammonium nitrate and from that amount the theoretical yield was like 1.1kt. Bags not part of that calculation though, lol.
It was reported that there was a 4.5 on the Richter from this....kelly index says 4.5 should come from a 5.6 kiloton yield....

Appears that the bags should have prevented any sort of pressure wave that would have caused a mass detonation like that.

Good flash present in the negatives, so that's probably why someone created the fake negatives with the fake bomb incoming that wasn't even the same resolution as the rest of the video. That was of course a day asaf ter see8 g stills of something else incoming, that ironically looked just like the round object that blew SpaceX on the pad. I'll upload that jpg later...

So other random facts, there has been a lot of bank fuckery in Lebanon this year, talks w IMF broke down and IMF accused Lebanese of basically same shit as ever, 'you dont want to Implement our reforms and aren't serious about this', see anything said to Greece for analog.

So what this does now is give them a huge need for international aid packages and the IMF is just gonna have to step in and

Please forget Syria was the global chokepoint for getting a pipeline up to europe, Lebanon will suffice, now please act properly and accept our billions that your grandkids will have difficulty paying back...

We really need to blow up some more stock piles of Ammonium nitrate to test these theories :-k

another tidbit I came across noted that the copious amounts of red means incomplete combustion, and combustion verbiage is important because it is distinctly different than detonation

"if your mix is not proper then you get a lot of red dust and low yield"
"the worse the mix, the more red gas you get"
"it will burn fast, but not at detonation speeds"
"mythbusters used premixed ANFO in bags, factory made with good proportions" (why they didnt have much of any red dust in their tests when they did em)

so that whole 1.1kT theoretical yield thing.... yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh......... ......there's no way ANFO reaches its theoretical max yield with so much red dust from incomplete combustion....so the gap between that and the Kelly Index's assertion that we witnessed a ~5.6kT blast just got a bit bigger...

I saw some 4k footage that was high quality - nothing was dropped on this - guaranteed some explosive device was used, on the ground.
