Channel 4 viewers were left gobsmacked when documentary Me and My Penis featured a number of erect penises, in what was an attempt to reduce the taboo.

A number of men spoke honestly and frankly about masturbation, sex, ejaculation and erections, while photographer Ajamu took artistic shots of them in the nude.

But viewers were left with their jaws on the floor when the eye-opening documentary featured a number of aroused penises completely uncensored and unobscured.

"F***ing hell, nearly had my eye out," one viewer exclaimed.

Another said: "Channel 4 doing all they can to appeal to the gay audience by showing an erect penis in HD when all we really want is Brookside back."

A third wrote: "This programme is unacceptable in how absolutely pointless it is. A load of c***s talking about their c***s."

Someone else tweeted: "Right the television gets worse. I'm turning over."

While another mused: "An erect k*** on Channel 4. What a time to be alive."

Artist Ajamu explained: "A lot of countries celebrate the penis in terms of its fertility, aliveness – in this country it's still seen as pornographic."

One of the men said: "By keeping the erection so taboo, we don't allow men to be so vulnerable."

Another contributor said: "Without an erect penis, we wouldn't have life, so there is a certain power to it, but it's not like a physical power. It's all connected. It's strong, it is being masculine."

And one of the others added: "I think hiding the male erection and making it this taboo thing maybe, gives it more power than it deserves because it's pretty ordinary actually."

While there was a certain level of titillating content, there was a much deeper conversation that took place.

A number of the men spoke of the sexual abuse they had faced in their childhoods that has stayed with them for the years afterwards.

Meanwhile, another spoke of the religious shame that he felt as a teen when masturbating which led to him causing lasting scarring on his own penis.

Viewers applauded the show for the honestly and vulnerability the men showed, with one writing: "More men need to discuss and let out their emotions. It should be as normal for men as it is for women."

And another added: "These guys on Me and My Penis are incredible, being really open and honest and vulnerable, something most women bang on about guys not doing enough by all they can bang on about now is faux outrage about an erect penis."

If you're watching a dick and there isn't a chick in the scene... you're gay.
