Online retail giant Amazon is getting even bigger.

The Seattle-based company announced Wednesday that it is looking to hire 33,000 people to work in corporate and tech jobs. The average pay for these positions will be $150,000 a year. The jobs are not the usual positions Amazon hires each year in the lead up to the holidays.

Rather, the mass of openings reflects Amazon's colossal growth during the global coronavirus pandemic. While many other retailers have floundered due to COVID-19, Amazon's extensive online offerings and no-hassle delivery service have propelled it to growth amid lockdowns and stay-home orders implemented around the globe.

The company reported record profits from April through June, despite shelling out for employee overtime pay, employee bonuses, and $4 billion in cleaning supplies. Already this year, Amazon has hired an additional 175,000 people to work in its warehouses. It also has brought on 1,000 people as part of its effort to create a second headquarters, near Washington, D.C.

This latest slate of new hires will largely work from home at first, with a planned return to in-office work coming in the future. Amazon says it will hire people mostly around its offices, such as those in Seattle, Denver, Phoenix, and New York.

For people interested in working at Amazon, and those looking for jobs elsewhere, Amazon will host an online "Career Day" on September 16.

The event will include online "fireside chats, panel discussions, and interviews with recruiting experts and industry leaders giving advice on how to help you land your next job," according to the website. It will also have individual career coaching sessions.

With more than 600,000 employees, Amazon is the nation's second-largest private employer, behind Walmart, Inc.

Same here, especially if you live in the 'burbs. If you wanted to live in downtown Denver though, it would be average as well.
