A 12 year-old died a painful and avoidable death after her neglectful parents let head lice suck on her blood for three years, a court heard. Kaitlyn Yozviak died of a heart attack and anemia last month, with investigators believing lower blood iron levels sparked by the youngster’s lice infestation may have potentially caused both conditions.
Kaitlyn, from Ivey in Georgia, died after being raised in a filthy home filled with cats, feces, bugs and lice. A social worker said the neglect the youngster endured was the worst they’d ever seen.
Kaitlyn’s mother Katie Horton and father Joey Yozviak could face murder charges after a grand jury was assigned to hear their case on Monday. Georgia Bureau of Investigation agents said Kaitlyn had suffered ‘excessive physical pain due to medical negligence.’
Kaitlyn was almost given up for adoption at birth when social services began investigating a separate allegation against her parents, but they ultimately decided to keep her.
Social workers were repeatedly called out to the family’s foul home, and placed Kaitlyn with her aunt for six days after a 2018 call-out revealed appalling conditions at the family’s home.
She was returned to her parents days later, with the family having no further contact with officials until Kaitlyn’s death last month.
Kaitlyn’s mother told investigators the little girl had not bathed in the week-and-a-half leading up to her untimely death.
The youngster’s body was found close to a vermin-covered mattress, WMAZ reported.
Neighbors told investigators they hadn’t seen Kaitlyn playing in the month and a half to two months leading up to her death, amid speculation the youngster was too depleted by her head lice to venture outside.
Kaitlyn’s two brothers were removed from their home by social services, with her parents being held without bond until their next court hearing.
