As China's Hubei province tries to lure back visitors after the coronavirus outbreak, officials have introduced some strict rules for tourism operators, including guidelines on how to smile.

Regional authorities are so concerned with the experience of tourists they have rolled out a program with a hyper focus on customer service.

Hubei's Service with a Smile manual, which reads somewhat like a dry legal document, tells those dealing with tourists the specifics they need to know.

It suggests "the face should be natural and relaxed, with the corners of the mouth slightly upward".

"Smile genuinely and naturally, with your teeth showing when you smile," it states.

The policy also offers strict directions on how to welcome and farewell guests.

Departing visitors should be escorted to a designated location, given a farewell speech, waved, and seen off from 5 metres away.

"Keep smiling towards visitors when they are 5–8 metres away from the entrance."

The directions also outline ideal gestures that should be "graceful and natural".

"When giving directions to visitors, fingers should be naturally together, palm side up 45 degrees," it states.

"When directing the approaching target, the arm is at an angle to the body of 120 degrees–150 degrees; arms should keep straight when directing distant targets, eyes should focus on the visitor and the target, while using smiles in conversations."
