INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — What’s worse, being “lame” or being locked up?

Two Vero Beach youths evidently were both after being “escorted” from a female acquaintance’s home and allegations of swiping three golf carts, according to affidavits.

The case of the lame and locked up began about 3:53 a.m. Dec. 28 when an Indian River County sheriff’s deputy reported spotting a golf cart driven by what appeared to be two juveniles. The deputy followed the cart, which ended up being abandoned on 22nd Avenue Southwest.

Deputies stated they apprehended an 18-year-old man, who reportedly exited tall brush and started running, and a 15-year-old boy, both Vero Beach residents.

The 15-year-old boy said he and the older teen were visiting a female friend in a mobile home park in the 7300 block of 20th Street.

About 1 a.m. they were in a verbal altercation with their friend, who reportedly thought they were “lame” and then “escorted” them from the residence, an affidavit states.

The two teens started looking for golf carts because they lacked transportation home.

According to statements, they absconded with three golf carts (two began running out of power) and “took back roads” for miles until deputies nabbed them.

After being accused by the female acquaintance of being “lame,” both were locked up, each on at least three counts of grand theft, records show.
