FEBRUARY 22--In what may be the worst explanation for driving 50 mph over the posted limit, a 21-year-old motorist told cops that he was speeding on a Florida highway because he was “listening to a song named Ciento Veinte, which means 120, so I was driving 120.”

Cops allege that Richard Lee Ortecho, 21, was spotted weaving in and out of traffic Saturday evening on Interstate 95 near Vero Beach. Ortecho, driving a Volkswagen, was clocked at “speeds ranging between 120 mph and 127 mph” in a 70 mph zone.

Ortecho barely missed striking other vehicles, according to an arrest affidavit, and did not immediately stop when a cop car with its lights flashing gave chase.

When Ortecho finally pulled over, he said, “I’m sorry, I didn’t know driving reckless was illegal,” cops report. Asked why he was driving in excess of 120 mph, Ortecho offered an odd answer.

Ortecho said he was driving while listening to the song “A Ciento Veinte,” a cut on an EP released last year by the rapper Track Insano. Ortecho noted that, “ciento veinte means 120, so I was driving 120.”

Pictured above, Ortecho was arrested for fleeing from police, a felony, and reckless driving, a misdemeanor. After a post-arrest search of the Volkswagen turned up some pot and a grinder, Ortecho was also charged with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Ortecho was released yesterday from the county jail after posting $6500 bond.

my buddy's foreign wife got off of a ticket once because she convinced the cop that she legit thought Interstate 91 meant the speed limit was 91  but the song said to go 120? dumb

No, we're mph around here, and a foreign accent was enough to plead ignorance and get off scot free. But fact of the matter is, the speed limit might as well be 90 around here, because most everyone goes 80-85 unless there's a cop in the median. Speed limit is a mere suggestion around here and cops dont bat an eye until you're going 15mph over the limit.

Yeah, I've gone past speed traps at 10 mph over the limit (usually 75 in a 65 on the interstate) and the cop just ignores it, especially if you are going with the flow of traffic. But if you start pushing it more than 10 mph over the limit on the highway, then you're asking to be pulled over.

hehe, its 65/55 here and cops dont bother unless you're going over 80 on the highway. my uncle's buddy who just retired as a bail commissioner told me straight up that the state cops arent going to bother if you're going under 80
