A suspected thief who tried to steal a Toyota Prius’s catalytic converter died when the car fell on top of him. The unnamed victim was flattened by the hybrid car in Anaheim, California, on Wednesday morning. Workers at a nearby construction company arrived at work to find the body, and dialed 911.
Firefighters responded to the scene, and pronounced the man dead shortly afterwards. Sean Harp saw the victim’s corpse before it was removed, and said the man’s torso and legs were sticking out from underneath the car.
Sean said: ‘There was a little scissor jack there that obviously wasn’t secured well enough underneath the vehicle. My assumption is once he started jarring on the vehicle it slipped and fell on him.
‘I really felt bad for the guy. We don’t know his circumstances, you know.’ Sean said cars in the area are regularly targeted by thieves for catalytic converters, which turn a vehicle’s exhaust emissions into harmless gases.
They contain precious metals including platinum, palladium and rhodium that are worth more than gold, and can be melted down to sell on to metal dealers, according to CNS.
Sergeant Shane Carringer, from Anaheim PD, said the car belonged to a business located at the complex, and confirmed Sean’s claim that the jack appeared to have failed.
