DELRAY BEACH, Fla. – A person was walking along Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach when they heard a woman yelling from an 8-foot deep storm drain on Tuesday.

Just before 9 a.m., the passerby called 911 to get help. Delray Beach Fire Rescue [DBFR] responded to the scene and found a 43-year-old naked woman trapped in the storm drain.

Crews used a ladder and a harness to raise the woman to ground level. A crowd gathered during the rescue and cheered as she was lifted out of the drain.

DBFR assessed her physical condition and took her to a local hospital to be treated for dehydration.

Delray Beach police discovered that the woman’s boyfriend had reported her missing 20 days ago, according to an incident report.

During an interview, she told police she went for a swim in a canal near her boyfriend’s house. She said she came across a doorway at a shallow part of the canal and began following tunnels until she realized she was lost. The woman claims she was stranded in the sewer system for three weeks, the report states.

She told officers she finally saw some light and decided to sit in the storm drain until someone found her, according to the report.

Officers said the woman seemed very lucid during the interview despite an alleged history of mental health issues and drug abuse. She did not meet criteria for a Baker Act, according to the report.

Later on, officers contacted the woman’s mother who told them her daughter has a history of doing odd things and making bad decisions when she is high on drugs.

Delray Beach Police spokesperson Ted White told WPTV that police are skeptical of the woman’s story. Officials are primarily wondering what she ate and drank if she was actually down there for three weeks.

The news outlet reached out to the South Florida Water Management District to see if the drains are all connected and whether the story is even possible. They are waiting to hear back.

NBC2 did not name the woman because she has not been arrested and may be mentally ill.
