A husband made his wife pretend to be an amputee during sex – and now wants to cut one of his healthy limbs off to satisfy his growing fetish.

The man’s unnamed wife wrote to the Abigail Van Buren agony aunt column after her husband asked her to cover-up part of her leg with a towel during sex to make her look like an amputee.

She said her marriage of six years was mostly ‘blissful,’ and that she had initially tried to maintain an open mind about her husband’s fetish – until recently.

The United States-based woman wrote: ‘Three months ago, he asked to do some role playing, where we hid my leg under a towel to give the appearance of having a below-the-knee amputation, which he says is his favorite.

‘I didn’t like it, but I went ahead with it. But now things are getting to be too much for me. He recently told me that not only does he find amputees attractive, but he wants to be one.’

Van Buren’s daughter Jeanne Phillips, who now writes the column on behalf of her late mother, answered the concerned woman by explaining her husband’s desire to remove one of his limbs is known as integrity identity disorder.

She recommended the woman do further research on the desire – but also sounded a note of caution for the marriage.

Phillips wrote: ‘You should also consult a licensed psychotherapist to help you decide whether this fetish is something you are prepared to live with or it’s time to end your marriage.’

A sexual interest in amputees is known as acrotomophilia, while the sexual desire to become an amputee is known as apotemnophilia.

Integrity identity disorder – the condition mentioned by Phillips in her reply – occurs when a person wants to remove one of their own limbs or paralyze themselves, although not necessarily out of sexual desire.

The disorder is rare, and has triggered ongoing debates among medical ethics experts about whether anyone is ever entitled to ask for the amputation of one of their own healthy limbs.

Opponents say anyone expressing desires to inflict such physical harm on themselves is likely not in a neurological state where they should be allowed to do so.
