MURRAY — A heated argument that started with one man making fun of another's vehicle ended violently when the vehicle owner shot and killed the other man, according to prosecutors.
Patrick Koaneil Brown, 42, of Midvale, was charged Thursday in 3rd District Court with murder and two counts of discharging a firearm causing serious injury, both first-degree felonies; possession of a firearm by a restricted person, a second-degree felony; and discharge of a firearm, a third-degree felony.
Brown is accused of shooting Darnell Brown, 39, on April 21 near 4500 S. Main. The two men were not related, according to police.
According to witness statements, Darnell Brown was making fun of Patrick Brown's black Range Rover in the parking lot of an apartment complex and the two began to argue. As the two continued to argue, Patrick Brown "pulled out a handgun and pointed it at Darnell who then got angry" because Patrick Brown had pointed a gun at him in front of his family, according to charging documents.
Patrick Brown then drove away from the parking lot and Darnell Brown followed. At the intersection of 4500 S. State, Patrick Brown "leaned out of his car and threatened to shoot Darnell if he kept following him," the charges state.
Darnell Brown then took a picture of the back of Patrick Brown's SUV with his phone before hitting it with his own vehicle, according to the charges, and then got out (of) his vehicle and yelled at Patrick Brown to "get out and fight him."
Patrick Brown made a U-turn with his Range Rover, "pulled up next to Darnell and shot him once in the head and then fired a couple more times at their vehicle before driving away," the charges say.
Darnell Brown's fiancé was sitting in the passenger seat. She told police she only knew the alleged gunman by the name "Bama." Using the picture Darnell Brown took, investigators used the temporary tag on the back of Patrick Brown's Range Rover to contact a local car dealership and get information about Brown who had just recently purchased his vehicle, according to the court documents. They used that information to locate and arrest Patrick Brown.
He was previously convicted of bank robbery and aggravated assault in Alabama and was not allowed to possess a gun, the charges state.
