A 14-year-old boy has been arrested and charged with murdering Tristyn Bailey, a 13-year-old Florida cheerleader whose body was found in a wooded area on Mother’s Day, the Orlando Sentinel reports.

Sheriff Robert Hardwick of the St. Johns County, Florida, Sheriff’s Office spoke at a Monday news conference, reporting that Aiden Fucci, 14, was in jail and facing a second-degree murder charge in connection with the death of the cheerleader, Tristyn Bailey.

Fucci could get slapped with additional charges.

“We have a suspect in custody. That is the only suspect that has to do with the death of Tristyn [Bailey],” Hardwick said of the arrest in connection with the death of the Florida cheerleader.

Investigators are looking into a Snapchat selfie that apparently depicts Fucci in the back of a police officer’s car flashing a peace sign.

News.com.au reports that Fucci morbidly and suspiciously captioned the photo with a reference to the dead Florida cheerleader: “Hey guys has inbody [sic] seen Tristyn [Bailey] lately?”

At 10 a.m. on Sunday morning, Tristyn Bailey’s family called Florida authorities to report that the cheerleader was missing. She was last seen around midnight.

At that time, she was hanging out with her friends at the Durbin Amenity Center in Durbin Crossing, which is south of Jacksonville, Florida.

In the immediate wake of Tristyn Bailey’s disappearance, neighbors in the Florida community joined in the desperate search for the missing teenager.

But their search would prove to be in vain. Her body was discovered later Sunday evening.

“This was not the outcome the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office wanted, or this community” wanted, Hardwick said.

The U.S. Sun reports that the grief stricken family of the murdered Florida cheerleader, Tristyn Bailey, hopes that Fucci “comes clean.”

“I’m happy they made an arrest and hope they try him as an adult,” Tristyn Bailey’s cousin said of the alleged murderer of the Florida cheerleader.

“Tristyn was a sweetheart, she loved cheerleading, I’m an emotional wreck, my husband and I didn’t sleep well last night.”

One of Tristyn Bailey’s cheerleading coaches said that the Florida teen was “an incredible leader, friend and role model for many athletes.”

The Florida Times-Union reports that Bailey’s cause of death was determined to be sharp-force trauma.

A 14-year-old Florida boy is being charged as an adult with premeditated first-degree murder in the death of Tristyn Bailey, a 13-year-old girl who was found dead earlier in May.

Bailey’s body was found on May 9 in a wooded area in the community of Durbin Crossing, about 20 miles south of Jacksonville, just hours after her family reported her missing.

State Attorney R.J. Larizza told reporters Thursday that Bailey was found with 114 stab wounds and that the tip of the folding buck knife used by the suspect was found in her scalp.

The suspect, who Larizza identified as Aiden Fucci, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder on May 10, but that has been upgraded to first-degree murder.

Larizza said the defendant had told "several" people prior to Bailey’s murder that he "intended to kill someone."

"He didn’t say who that was, but he indicated to witnesses that he was going to kill someone by taking them in the woods and stabbing them," Larizza said. "The statements that the defendant made to his friends made it clear that he was considering a homicide. And I got to tell you this, it’s disturbing and concerning that those statements were not … taken seriously by the folks that heard them."

Larizza said the suspect does not have any criminal history. If convicted, Fucci faces life in prison but would be eligible for a review at 25 years old because of his age, Larizza said.

Bailey and the suspect both grew up in the same neighborhood and attended Patriot Oaks Academy, where Bailey was a cheerleader. A motive in the case is unclear.

ST. JOHN'S COUNTY, Fla. – The mother of 14-year-old Aiden Fucci, who is accused of murdering 13-year-old Tristyn Bailey, has been arrested and charged with tampering with evidence, according to an arrest warrant.

According to the warrant, Crystal Lane Smith, 35, was arrested Saturday after investigators reviewed video surveillance obtained from the home on the day the 13-year-old girl was reported missing that showed Smith going into the boy’s room to get a pair of blue jeans and took it to the bathroom to scrub them in the sink. She then took the jeans to the master bedroom “for a period of time,” according to the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office.

The St. John’s County Sheriff’s Office said Smith surrendered to authorities at the sheriff’s office Saturday.

“Crystal Smith will be held responsible for her role in this case and justice will be served for Tristyn Bailey and her family,” Sheriff Robert Hardwick said in a statement.

The sheriff’s office said the video surveillance confirmed Fucci was wearing jeans the night of May 8 and early May 9. Deputies arrived to Fucci’s home on May 9 to question him on Bailey’s whereabouts. He later left with deputies to show them where he was last with the 13-year-old girl.

When the boy left with deputies, the sheriff’s office said video showed his mother retrieving the jeans and scrubbing them around 12:55 p.m. According to the arrest warrant, a witness was at the home with Smith around 1:05 p.m. and Smith went into the master bedroom to get the jeans.

The two then were “inspecting the jeans several times” before the jeans were put back in Fucci’s room. According to deputies, the witness told authorities Smith showed the jeans to her to check if she saw anything and told Smith that she “could get in trouble for washing the jeans.”

Deputies said at one point during the investigation, the boy was in an interview room with Smith and his father when the parents “asked him about anything that would be on his clothes” from the night before. When Fucci responded he was wearing blue jeans, his mother asked if he was sure nothing was on it. According to the warrant, Fucci responded, “I think so, why?” and his mother then gave him a “questioning” look and whispered, “Blood.”

Investigators found the jeans in the boy’s bedroom, which tested positive for the presence of blood, according to the warrant. Smith faces tampering with evidence charges, which is a third-degree felony in Florida, according to the state attorney’s office.

Prosecutors said last week they have charged the 14-year-old as an adult on first-degree murder charges in the homicide of Bailey after reviewing all of the evidence showing the young victim suffered a “horrific” attack before her death. Fucci is scheduled to be arraigned on June 10. He’s being held without bond.

Bailey was found stabbed to death May 9 in a wooded area near her St. Johns County home. State Attorney R.J. Larizza said that Bailey was stabbed 114 times, with at least 49 stab wounds to her hands, arms and head that were defensive in nature.

A Florida teen charged in the grisly murder of a 13-year-old classmate, found dead near a pond with dozens of stab wounds, pleaded guilty to murder Monday.

It would have been the first day of jury selection for his trial, court documents show, two years after an early court appearance where he allegedly mumbled about demons taking his soul.

Tristyn Bailey, a cheerleader at Patriot Oaks Academy, was last seen on surveillance video walking with her killer, Aiden Fucci, on May 9, 2021 in St. Johns County. He also attended the school.

An hour later, the same camera captured Fucci walking away alone.

Police later discovered her remains with 114 stab wounds and a piece of the murder weapon broken off in her skull, according to authorities. Her body was about .3 miles from Fucci's house, according to the police report. They found the rest of the knife ditched in a pond nearby and arrested the suspect on May 10.

When they questioned Fucci, he offered changing stories and eventually admitted to having been with Tristyn the night she vanished and getting into an argument with her, court documents show.

Fucci told police he shoved her to the ground and left. When they served a search warrant on his bedroom, they found clothes similar to what he was seen wearing in the surveillance video – with blood on them.

Fucci, who was 14 at the time and charged as an adult, changed his plea on the same day jury selection was scheduled to begin in his murder trial. Despite his youth, he was listed at the time of his arrest as 5 feet, 11 inches tall and weighing 180 pounds.

Shortly after arriving for jury selection in a first-degree murder trial Monday morning, Fucci's defense entered the guilty plea.

Evidence against him includes more than 100 pages of emails from a school resource officer.

In one, obtained by WJXT-TV, the officer relayed Fucci's friend claimed the slaying was "100% premeditated" and that the teen had spoken about wanting to kill something in the woods.

At a prior hearing, Fucci could be heard mumbling, "Please don’t let the demons take my soul. The demons are going to take my soul away," according to WJXT-TV.

"Why am I here?" he continued. "I just want to talk to my mom and dad. What’s going on? What’s going on?"

Fucci's mother, Crystal Smith, was also charged with evidence tampering after investigators said they obtained video of her washing blood from her son's jeans in a bathroom sink shortly after they took him for questioning.

Police later obtained the same jeans through a search warrant and allegedly found blood on them and in the sink drain. She has since posted bond and is due back in court on April 4.

After her son's guilty plea, St. Johns County Sheriff Robert Hardwick praised investigators for an "all-out" effort to bring Fucci to justice as well as the community as a whole, which supported the Bailey family and called in tips.

In a separate statement Monday, Baily attorney Matthew H. Hinson heaped praise on prosecutors, the sheriff's office and the family's neighbors.

"Foremost, we would like to give thanks to God," he said in a statement. "Since this nightmare began, we have had the love and support of so many. We know so many have lifted Tristyn, our family, and her friends up in prayer. The members of our community have been simply exceptional in the support they have given us."

Fucci, who remains in custody, is due back in court on Feb. 23.
