As if a global pandemic wasn’t enough, an entirely new outbreak has wreaked havoc on NBC’s game show Ultimate Slip ‘N Slide. Last week, NBC placed an indefinite pause on production for its upcoming competition series, reportedly due to diarrhea circulating on the set of the show. Multiple folks involved with the show reported that gastrointestinal issues had spread amongst the crew.

The Wrap reported that “up to 40 crew members fell violently ill,” citing a “person with knowledge of the production.” (Matt Beloni was the first to break the news in his “What I’m Hearing” newsletter.) The source also said people were “collapsing” and “being forced to run into port-o-potties” due to “awful explosive diarrhea.” TMZ also spoke with an anonymous source who said that multiple people fell ill with gastrointestinal symptoms.

A representative for Universal Television Alternative Studios, who is producing the show for NBC, spoke with People about Ultimate Slip ‘N Slide, confirming the halt in production.

“The health and safety of everyone on our set is our number one priority, so out of an abundance of caution we have made the decision to stop production of Ultimate Slip ‘N Slide at the current location,” the spokesperson said. “We are in the process of determining next steps in order to complete production.”

People also confirmed that one crew member tested positive for giardia — a microscopic parasite that, when swallowed, causes diarrheal disease. Samples from nearby bodies of water, like the slide pool, water truck, and restroom sinks, came back negative. But additional testing on June 10 showed giardia in the set’s surrounding area.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, giardia can be found “on surfaces or in soil, food, or water that has been contaminated with feces from infected people or animals.” It is not currently known how many people have been affected by the parasite.

Ultimate Slip ‘N Slide is currently set to premiere on Sunday, Aug. 8 at 10:30 p.m. ET, after the Olympic Summer Games closing ceremony. The show takes Wham-O’s iconic backyard waterslide game and transforms it “into a real-life water park full of gigantic slippery rides with the chance to take home a big cash prize,” per NBC.

Bobby Moynihan and Ron Funches will host the series. A network spokesperson told The Wrap both are healthy and fine.
