A prestigious high school in Singapore is in shock after a boy allegedly murdered a fellow student with an axe in a school bathroom on Monday.
Police were called to River Valley High School on Monday about 11am following the discovery of a 13-year-old boy lying motionless on the floor with multiple wounds.
The school was locked down and paramedics pronounced the boy dead at the scene.
A 16-year-old boy was arrested and charged with his murder.
"Notwithstanding the preliminary findings and the arrest of the teenager, the police are continuing their investigations into the motive for the assault. An axe was also seized as a case exhibit," the police said.
Police added preliminary investigations suggested the teens were not known to each other.
Murder convictions in Singapore can lead to the death penalty but not for people aged under 18.

K Shanmugam, Minister for Home Affairs and Law, wrote in a statement on Facebook there are questions about how the axe was obtained.
“One of the worst things that can happen to parents is to hear, from school, that their child has been killed,” he wrote.
“It's completely shocking because safety is assumed and normally (in Singapore anyway) assured.”
“We all grieve with the parents of the boy who was killed. It’s difficult to even describe the true extent of their grief.”
