A monkey's romance with a female visitor to his enclosure has been brought to a tragic end after zoo bosses said he needs to concentrate on socialising with other primates.
The forbidden love story has captured the hearts of many in Belgium but the woman is no longer allowed to have weekly meetings with Chita, a 38-year-old chimpanzee.
Adie Timmermans is a regular visitor to the zoo and has grown very attached to the chimp, who she visited regularly for four years, The Mirror reports.
The woman claims that she and Chita would both be distraught if they were not allowed to see each other any more.
Adie reportedly said: “I love that animal and he loves me.
“I haven’t got anything else. Why do they want to take that away?”
The weekly meet ups involved blowing kisses and waving through the glass of the chimp enclosure.
The friendship has come to a bitter end as the zoo said it isn't good for Chita on a social level with other animals.
They pointed to the fact that most of the day he is with other chimps and it's important that he is able to get on well with them.

It's understood that Chita grew up as a pet and was donated to the zoo when he became 'unmanageable'
The zoo reportedly stated: “An animal that is too focused on people is less respected by its peers.
"We want Chita to be a chimpanzee as much as possible.
"Outside of visiting hours at the zoo, he has to manage 15 hours [a day] in his group. We want to give him the chance to be as happy as possible.”
It's understood that Chita grew up as a pet and was donated to the zoo when he became "unmanageable".
Since then Chita has not bonded with the new chimpanzees he's been introduced to.

One fight even led to him injuring his back in 2008.
The zoo said that Adie will not be welcome at the zoo if she continues to see Chita, but Adie says she can't see what she is doing wrong.
She said: “Chita is 38 and has been used to people from an early age. In average chimpanzees live to about 40 so his behaviour isn’t going to change now is it.”
