A mystery was unfolding in Croatia on Tuesday after a woman with no knowledge of who she is was found sitting alone on an outcrop of rock just off the island of Krk.
A fisherman initially spotted the woman, who speaks perfect English and is believed to be in her 60s, seated by herself on Sept. 12 along a bay near the village of Soline, in a remote area located on the north of the island. With concerns about his own boat running out of fuel should he attempt to save her, the fisherman phoned authorities, who showed up to assist with the rescue.
Fourteen members of Croatia’s mountain rescue service (HGSS) were able to reach her after driving and then hiking a mile to where she was, officials told the outlet.
“Down on the shore, we found a woman with minor injuries, she also had a few scratches and was extremely dehydrated and emaciated. She could barely take a few sips of water,” 24 Sata quoted HGSS as saying.
“We placed her on a stretcher because she was unable to walk, and transported her to the hospital,”
She is being treated in hospital in Rijeka on the Croatian mainland.
Authorities told local media outlet 24 Sata it appeared she’d been wondering the area, often frequented by bears, for at least a few days by the time help arrived.
The woman has been described as 5-foot-4 with shoulder-length brown hair. She’d been wearing a pink sun hat, striped top and dark trousers at the time, but was not carrying any identification or documents on her.
“She speaks English, but she does not remember her identity,” police said in a statement to CNN. “She is currently located in hospital and is in stable condition.”
