WEST BLOOMFIELD, MI -- Police believe a 48-year-old man was accidentally pulled into a wood chipper Monday morning by his jacket while feeding the chipper. According to Fox 2 Detroit, police were called around 9 a.m. by one of the man’s co-workers who found him inside the wood chipper.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and were able to perform first aid on the man -- who was still conscious at the time -- and apply a tourniquet to an unknown body part, however he died on the way to the hospital. He was part of a crew working at a private residence.

Two investigations have been launched surrounding the incident, one by police and another by the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Although the investigation is ongoing, police say every indication is that the man’s jacket was caught on a branch that was being fed into the wood chipper and it pulled him inside. Police are also looking at the machinery being used to make sure it was working properly before the incident happened.

According to MIOSHA statistics, the man’s death is the 33rd worker death in Michigan this year. The name of the victim and the company he worked for have not been released by police.
