JOLIET, IL — Drunk Joliet motorist Christopher Hernandez crashed into three cars Saturday evening near the Louis Joliet Mall, and then left his seriously injured 10-year-old son at a nearby store, so he could flee the scene of the crash he caused, according to Joliet police.

Saturday's collision happened around 5 p.m. along Plainfield Road near Hennepin Drive.

Joliet officers eventually captured Hernandez and brought him to the Will County Jail where he's charged with four counts of aggravated DUI, DUI, endangering the life or health of a child, failure to remain at the scene of a personal injury accident and obstructing justice.

Hernandez was driving westbound on Plainfield Road at Hennepin Drive when he struck the rear of the vehicle ahead of him, police said.

"This collision caused both vehicles to lose control and skid into two additional vehicles that were waiting in the left turn lane of eastbound Plainfield Road," police spokesman Dwayne English announced. "Immediately following the collision, Hernandez fled the scene carrying his 10-year-old son, who was seriously injured in the crash."

Hernandez carried his injured son into a nearby retail store, where he left the child in the store and ran off, police said. The child suffered a broken leg during the crash, and he was taken to St. Joe's hospital, police said.

People in the other three cars were not injured.

Following an extensive search, Joliet officers found Hernandez in the 1200 block of Wyoming Avenue where he was taken into custody.

Jail logs indicate that Hernandez lives in the 100 block of Luana Road. After being taken to Silver Cross Hospital, Hernandez was booked into the Will County Jail around 3:25 a.m. Sunday.

His bail is set at $250,000.
