Nintendo is cutting prices on their 3DS by $80 in an effort to spark interest in the slow-moving handheld.

The company revealed it will drop the cost of the 3DS from $249.99 to $169.99 starting August 12.

"For anyone who was on the fence about buying a Nintendo 3DS, this is a huge motivation to buy now," said Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime in a statement.

The company admits the 3DS has experienced a slow start at retail since launching in March in a separate statement revealing first quarter financial results. Sluggish 3DS sales and the upcoming price drop helped fuel a decline in year-over-year net sales at Nintendo.

According to Nintendo, 4.32 million 3DS handhelds have been sold worldwide since the device first launched in Japan in February. Of those, more than 830,000 were purchased in the U.S.

Along with the price drop, the company will offer 20 free downloadable games to "anyone who owns a Nintendo 3DS system and uses a wireless broadband Internet signal to connect to the Nintendo eShop at least once before 11:59 p.m. Eastern time on Aug. 11."

Those owners will then be enrolled in a 3DS Ambassadors program, allowing them to download 10 NES Virtual Console games (Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda are among options) and 10 Game Boy Advance titles free of charge. The NES games will be available September 1, and GBA games later this year.

Yea, it had nothing to do with thousands of people returning them because of migraines and seizures....

Totally not surprised by this at all. Not a great game selection so far, and the handheld itself gives me a headache inside of five minutes. Though they say that if you keep using it, within a couple weeks that won't happen anymore. My eyes are bad enough as they are, thank you. I'd like to keep what vision I have!
