BAY CITY, MI — Having recently moved to Bay City from Wyoming, a 39-year-old woman has been criminally charged with causing two traffic crashes while she was super drunk.

Christina A. Delaurentis on Monday, March 7, appeared in Bay County District Court for arraignment on single counts of operating a motor vehicle with a high blood alcohol content causing injury with a prior conviction, operating while intoxicated causing serious injury, and third-offense operating while intoxicated. The first charge is a 10-year felony, while the latter two are punishable by up to five years’ imprisonment.

The charges stem from a pair of crashes that occurred just before 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 2. The first occurred when Delaurentis, driving south on South Henry Street in a white GMC pickup with a Wyoming license plate, ran a red light at the East Jenny Street intersection and crashed into a white Honda Accord.

Delaurentis left the scene and continued driving south for another block, where she ran a second red light at the West Thomas Street intersection and was struck by a black GMC pickup that had the green light.

Police arrived on scene and found Delaurentis bleeding from a head wound, with her 61-year-old uncle pinned in as a passenger. Officers wrote in their reports, contained in court files, that Delaurentis smelled of alcohol, had slurred speech, and watery eyes, all signs of intoxication.

Delaurentis told paramedics at the scene that she had organ failure from drinking and prescription medications. Asked by police if she had recently consumed alcohol, Delaurentis said she had drunk two vodka mixed drinks, but due to her organ failure, her body was unable to process the alcohol well, court records show.

Paramedics placed Delaurentis in a neck brace, secured her to a cot, and took her to McLaren Bay Region hospital.

At 8:14 p.m., Delaurentis submitted to a preliminary Breathalyzer test, the results of which indicated her blood alcohol level was 0.25. A second such test administered at 8:38 p.m. showed her BAC was 0.23, court records show.

In Michigan, a person is considered intoxicated when their BAC reaches 0.08. A person is considered “super drunk” when their BAC hits 0.17.

Hospital staff also took samples of Delaurentis’ blood for analysis, court records show.

In the first collision, the Honda Accord was driven by a 73-year-old woman and contained a 73-year-old man as a passenger. Both spoke with paramedics at the scene and were released.

The black GMC involved in the second crash was driven by a 45-year-old woman who was also hospitalized. She later told police she had been heading east on Thomas and had the green light when the collision occurred.

“I don’t remember seeing the other vehicle,” the woman told police. “I only remember the impact. my vehicle got spun around. I remember it was like a blur, so she must have been going fast.”

Delaurentis’ uncle, a Bay City man, was also hospitalized. He suffered a hip fracture and a bruise to his right lung, police reports state.

Due to Delaurentis being admitted to the hospital, Bay County District Judge Mark E. Janer gave her a personal recognizance bond. The afternoon of Sunday, March 5, a police officer went to the hospital and arrested Delaurentis on Janer’s advisement that he wanted her jailed once she was discharged.

Records show Delaurentis was twice convicted of drunken driving offenses in Wyoming in May 2006 and April 2015. In 2020, she was arrested twice in Wyoming on drunken driving charges.

At her arraignment, Delaurentis’ bond was set at $35,000 cash-surety. If she posts it, she is to have no contact with her uncle or anyone else involved in either crash.

DeLaurentis is to appear for a preliminary examination at 3:45 p.m. on March 23.

Not condoning my past behavior, but when I had been out drinking in my younger days and would stupidly still get behind the wheel, I would always make sure to drive MORE carefully for fear of getting pulled over. I don't understand these people that just drive like absolute maniacs after they had been drinking. Especially now when there are things like Lyft and Uber that you could use to get yourself home.
