BELLPORT, N.Y. (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – A Long Island teen was arrested on a charge of making a terroristic threat after he threatened to carry out a mass shooting at his high school Friday, authorities said.
The 16-year-old, who has not been identified because of his age, made the threat to Bellport High School on Instagram Thursday, according to Suffolk County police and the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office.
Multiple people called 911 after seeing the post on Instagram, police said.
Suffolk D.A. Raymond Tierney said police officers quickly responded when they learned about the threat.

Detectives interviewed the teen and searched his Bellport home, where no guns were found, police said. He was arrested at his home at 7:45 p.m.
The student faces charges of making a terroristic threat and aggravated harassment. He’s expected to be arraigned Friday.
“We take these threats seriously and will devote our resources to ensuring the safety of our children,” Tierney said in a statement.
Tierney said he’s convening a School Safety Summit with parents, teachers, school officials and law enforcement “to work on improving our response to school safety threats and keeping our kids safe.”
According to the South Country School District, the threatening post read, “bellport mass shooting tmr? Shhh.” It also included a smiley face emoji. Officials said police determined the threat was not credible.
In a letter, the district’s superintendent, Joseph Giani, wrote that school officials are cooperating with police.
“In addition to the arrest, the student will also receive the appropriate disciplinary consequence in accordance with the District’s Code of Conduct,” Giani said.
Schools in the district will reopen for students and staff on May 31, after the Memorial Day weekend.
“At that time, all schools will continue to operate on a modified lockout and classroom doors remain closed at all times,” Giani wrote.
The threat came two days after authorities in Texas said an 18-year-old gunman killed 19 students and two teachers at an elementary school in Uvalde on Tuesday.
Authorities said the Texas gunman posted images of his guns and a gun magazine to Instagram before the shooting.
After Tuesday's shooting, Suffolk police Commissioner Rodney Harrison released a statement, saying, “While there are currently no credible threats in Suffolk County, the department is monitoring the ongoing investigation and will be increasing patrols around school buildings out of an abundance of caution.”
Nassau County police also said they were "intensifying" their patrols around all schools. And Gov. Kathy Hochul said state police would be doing "daily check-ins" at schools "every single day" until the end of the school year.
