A driver plowed a vehicle into a crowd of pedestrians in Berlin on Wednesday, killing at least one person and injuring at least eight others, German authorities said.

Berlin police spokesman Martin Dams said the incident occurred near the Kurfuerstendamm shopping boulevard located in the west of the German capital.

Dams said the suspected driver has been arrested, although it remains unclear whether the collision was intentional or if the driver had accidentally driven into the crowd.

The incident took place near Breitscheid Square, where 13 people were killed in 2016 after someone drove into a Christmas market.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

At least one person has died and dozens are injured after a motorist swerved onto a pavement and ploughed down everyone in his path.

Emergency services have cordoned off a street in Berlin, Germany where around 30 people are understood to have been injured at the corner of Rankestraße and Tauentzienstraße in the west of the city.

Of those wounded which included students, a Berlin Fire spokesperson has said five are battling life-threatening injuries.

Celebrity John Barrowman happened to be at the scene and claims to have walked past "multiple fatalities" in what he fears to be terrorist attack, although this has not been confirmed by the authorities.

A dramatic snap shows a Renault car crashed through the window of a department store with emergency crews attending to victims with helicopters landing further down the road.

Berlin Police spokesman Thilo Cablitz, has told the media that the Renault driver initially drove into passers-by at the road's corner before returning to the road and finally crashing into a shop window around 200 metres along.

According to the police, the driver of the car is being questioned over whether he deliberately drove through people at around 10.15am on Wednesday.

The actor tweeted: "We think we have witnessed a terrorist attack here in Berlin we’re not sure there’s a lot of people dead bodies all over the place we’ve seen a car that came down the road and ended up in a storefront covering three city blocks it’s pretty horrific."

Crouching beside a tree on the street for his own protection and a flashing fire engine parked behind him, John recorded a video speaking on his view of the incident.

John claims to have seen a dead body in the middle of the road.

He said: "There's a lot of police, there's a dead body in the middle of the road and over here there is all of the emergency services that are trying to help victims. There's a lot of people walking with limps and injuries."

In a second video John tells his Twitter followers with confidence that there are "multiple fatalities" and "hundreds of emergency services" in the area.

He added that he and others in the area have been ordered to leave as the cordon expands.

John said: "I do have to say thank you to my friend Mikey K, my friend who rang ironically as it was going on and the first thing he said to us was to get behind a tree. Mikey's ex-military.

"He said get behind a tree, put something in between you and anything that might come at you so we did that."

The Berlin fire service tweeted: "#Rettungsdienst_Einsatz in #Charlottenburg in #Rankestraße with several injured people #MANV . Around 60 emergency services are currently on site or on the way. update follows..."

The tragedy has happened almost at the same place as where an Islamic extremist drove through a bustling Christmas market, killing 12 people including the driver and injuring 70 more in December 2016.

We need to ban automatic transmissions

The model T had two gears and 20 horsepower. The founding fathers of automobiles never intended for 100's of horsepower and high velocity 6 speed transmissions.

It's definitely the car manufacturers fault for the increase in vehicle accidents over the decades.
