Here's something to keep in mind as you follow this evening's congressional debate over the debt ceiling.
According to the latest daily statement from the U.S. Treasury, the government had an operating cash balance of $73.8 billion at the end of the day yesterday.
Apple's last earnings report (PDF here) showed that the company had $76.2 billion in cash and marketable securities at the end of June.
In other words, the world's largest tech company has more cash than the world's largest sovereign government.
That's because Apple collects more money than it spends, while the U.S. government does not.

Hahahaha, RIM is lucky to still be in business. I bet by 2015 they are out of the game.

Ahh it's not that bad. They still have 15% of the world market of smartphones. In Canada their share is over 40%.

They are so far behind the curve, I cant see how they will pull out of the nosedive they are in. There products are garbage, their email is always down. They come out with dumb shit like the playbook that can only get online if you have a blackberry. Everyone I know who who has tried an iphone or and android phone has switched from their blackberry.

exactly, either they'll switch to android soon or they're doomed.

Is a great thing to think about. America's best corporate leaders are vastly better than our political leaders -- think of Jobs, Bezos, Buffett, Page, Brin & Schmidt.

Some things that distinguish them from politicians -- their power (absolute, or near) and their time horizon (long term). All of them are willing and able to spend money today to build a franchise tomorrow. All of them are willing to look their portfolio and say "we tried this, it didn't meet our expectations, we're shutting it down"

None of them are overtly ideological, and to the extent they do have a political ideology, it's slightly left of center, and vqstly to the left of the American congress. Look at Bill Gates and the Gates Foundation, for example-- their activities are very similar to the foreign aid given by a country like Sweden.

But I come back to the power. No one argues with Steve Jobs at Apple. When the dot Mac project had a screwed up rollout, he dragged every member of the team into an auditorium, told them that they had embarrassed the company -- before too long everyone associated with the project had been fired.
