SPRINGVILLE — A fire burning in Springville was started by a man who was trying to kill a spider Monday afternoon, police say.

Reports of a fire "north of town on the mountainside" came in just before 5 p.m., the Springville Fire department said. The fire was then at approximately 40 acres and growing, and is requiring the assistance of several nearby departments including Provo Fire and Rescue, Mapleton Fire, and Utah County Fire, officials said.

The man, who has not been named yet, was arrested east of Springville.

"As fire (crews) responded, they got to the area where it appeared that the fire had started, and there was a man there with his dog," said Utah County Sheriff's Sgt. Spencer Cannon. "(The man) told them that he was there and that he was the one who started it and that he had been using a lighter to burn a spider. We don't know why he was doing that. He has been arrested and is being booked into jail right now on a fire-related charge. … He was also found to be in possession of drugs and paraphernalia, so he will be booked for those charges as well."

Officials asked residents to avoid the area to "help open the roads for emergency vehicles."
